Mark lasted about fifteen seconds.<\/p>\n

Then he turned the laptop toward me.<\/p>\n

So I did.<\/p>\n

The Denver position wasn\u2019t a lateral move dressed up with mountain scenery.<\/p>\n

The company had expanded it.<\/p>\n

Regional director across five states, with a significant salary increase, a larger bonus structure, and responsibility for three operations teams.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Mark. I mean it. I\u2019ve been with Riverside eleven years. I\u2019m not quitting my job because your mother made you feel disposable.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression tightened. \u201cThat\u2019s not what I\u2019m asking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what are you asking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us to look.\u201d<\/p>\n

That stopped me.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot move,\u201d he said. \u201cLook. If it doesn\u2019t work for both of us, I turn it down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019d do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

He blinked. \u201cClaire. You\u2019re my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

The answer was so obvious that I felt slightly foolish for needing to hear it.<\/p>\n
