Oliver disliked her even more.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou always give people the benefit of the doubt.\u201d He smiled. \u201cSometimes too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

After that, I watched Charlotte more carefully.<\/p>\n

Still, I hated feeling suspicious because of how I grew up. My parents could spend weeks after arguments speaking through me.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell your father dinner\u2019s ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTell your mother I\u2019m not hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n

By twelve, I had one rule: say the ugly thing out loud.<\/p>\n

Oliver knew it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I kissed Daisy, watched them leave, and went inside.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Nearly an hour passed.<\/p>\n

Then someone pounded on the door.<\/p>\n

I opened it and froze.<\/p>\n

Charlotte stood there holding Daisy.<\/p>\n

My daughter was awake, clutching her jacket.<\/p>\n

Charlotte stepped inside. \u201cYour husband doesn\u2019t know I saw him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSaw him doing what?\u201d<\/p>\n

She glanced at Daisy, then me. \u201cHe left her with another woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when my marriage stopped feeling like a marriage and became a question I couldn\u2019t ignore.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother woman where?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThree blocks over.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was coming from the store. I saw him carry Daisy into a building. Ten minutes later he came out alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart hammered. \u201cAnd you thought, what? Kidnapping?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you went inside?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith no idea who was there?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI knocked. Daisy was inside. I said I was your neighbor and that you were looking for her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. I lied.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe gave Daisy to me because Daisy recognized me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe did?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said, \u2018black lady.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat tracks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe woman looked scared when I mentioned you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cScared how?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike she didn\u2019t know you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

I took Daisy from her. \u201cDid they kiss?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid he know her?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n

I grabbed Daisy\u2019s coat. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause if I wait, I\u2019ll get Oliver\u2019s version first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really don\u2019t do suspense, do you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d rather hear something awful tonight than imagine ten worse things by morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cApartment 3B.\u201d<\/p>\n

I paused at the door. \u201cWhy are you helping me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Charlotte almost smiled. \u201cAsk me after you meet her.\u201d<\/p>\n
