When my father\u2019s restaurant chain began drowning in debt, I quietly refinanced its loans through Hawthorne Capital, the investment firm I had founded under my middle name. I renegotiated supplier agreements, repaired the company\u2019s credit, and put in $1.8 million of my own money.<\/p>\n

My parents thought Vanessa had arranged the rescue package.<\/p>\n

I let them believe it because she begged me.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad needs hope,\u201d she had said. \u201cHe\u2019ll accept help more easily if he thinks it came through Derek\u2019s connections.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now she raised her wineglass.<\/p>\n

Vanessa had never read a balance sheet without calling me afterward. She had also missed three loan payments in two months\u2014payments Hawthorne Capital hadn\u2019t pursued because I had frozen enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cSay something,\u201d Mother demanded.<\/p>\n

I folded my napkin and set it beside my plate.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cVanessa should finally be responsible for everything she claims to have built.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile widened.<\/p>\n

I stood and grabbed my coat.<\/p>\n

Mother scoffed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWalking away because you can\u2019t handle the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I replied. \u201cI\u2019m walking away because I finally can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa lifted her glass as I left.<\/p>\n

Outside, cold rain streaked the windows.<\/p>\n

I sat in my car, pulled out my phone, and called my attorney.<\/p>\n
