He slipped it into my gas tank as naturally as if he had done it dozens of times before.<\/p>\n

I watched him siphon the fuel into a red plastic container.<\/p>\n

Four minutes later, he replaced the gas cap, wiped his hands, stood up, and walked across the lawn toward the house next door.<\/p>\n

I knew that walk.<\/p>\n

I had watched it for six years.<\/p>\n

Clark.<\/p>\n

My neighbor.<\/p>\n

I lowered the phone onto the kitchen table.<\/p>\n

My coffee was cold.<\/p>\n

My hands were trembling.<\/p>\n

I told myself it was because the house was chilly.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m seventy years old.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve buried my parents.<\/p>\n

Most of my closest friends.<\/p>\n

And three years ago, I buried my wife.<\/p>\n

After that much loss, you start believing there are very few things left in the world capable of surprising you.<\/p>\n

I was wrong.<\/p>\n

My name is Frank.<\/p>\n

I live at the end of Maple Court in a quiet suburban neighborhood where people wave while collecting their mail and complain when someone leaves a trash bin out too long.<\/p>\n

My wife Ellen and I bought this house forty-one years ago.<\/p>\n

We raised our son here.<\/p>\n

We argued here.<\/p>\n

Made up here.<\/p>\n

Celebrated birthdays.<\/p>\n

Hosted Christmas dinners.<\/p>\n

Grew older.<\/p>\n

Ellen died three springs ago.<\/p>\n

Since then, the house has always felt one room too large.<\/p>\n

I still keep the thermostat at the temperature she preferred.<\/p>\n

I still sleep on the left side of the bed.<\/p>\n

A faded blue 1994 Ford pickup.<\/p>\n

Anyone driving past would probably assume I still owned it because I couldn\u2019t afford something newer.<\/p>\n

They\u2019d be wrong.<\/p>\n

That truck was practically part of my marriage.<\/p>\n

Ellen and I bought it when our son was still in high school.<\/p>\n

We took it to the lake every summer.<\/p>\n

Carried lumber in it when we built our deck.<\/p>\n

Drove it to the hospital when Ellen\u2019s mother had a stroke.<\/p>\n

Then drove home from the funeral three days later without saying a word.<\/p>\n

When Ellen became ill near the end, I sometimes took her out in that truck simply because driving made her smile.<\/p>\n

She would roll down the window and hold her hand outside in the wind like she was seventeen again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis old thing is going to outlive both of us,\u201d she once joked, patting the dashboard.<\/p>\n

She was half right.<\/p>\n

So when fuel began disappearing from that truck, it bothered me far more than losing twenty dollars\u2019 worth of gasoline should have.<\/p>\n

It started on a Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Tuesday was always fill-up day.<\/p>\n

Old men become creatures of habit.<\/p>\n

I filled the tank at the Shell station on Hollis.<\/p>\n

Forty-one dollars and some change.<\/p>\n

The next afternoon, I drove ten minutes to help my friend Walt repair a section of fence.<\/p>\n

Ten minutes there.<\/p>\n

Ten minutes home.<\/p>\n

Then I barely drove anywhere for the rest of the week.<\/p>\n

Thursday.<\/p>\n

Friday.<\/p>\n

Saturday.<\/p>\n

I stayed home.<\/p>\n

Read.<\/p>\n

Mowed the yard.<\/p>\n

Watched baseball.<\/p>\n

Sunday morning, I climbed into the truck for church and glanced at the fuel gauge.<\/p>\n

Just under half.<\/p>\n

I stared.<\/p>\n

That made no sense.<\/p>\n

I tapped the gauge.<\/p>\n

Nothing changed.<\/p>\n

My first thought wasn\u2019t theft.<\/p>\n

It was memory.<\/p>\n

My father became forgetful toward the end of his life.<\/p>\n

Ever since turning seventy, I had quietly watched myself for signs.<\/p>\n

Missing appointments.<\/p>\n

Repeating questions.<\/p>\n

Forgetting where I put things.<\/p>\n

That morning, sitting behind the wheel, I wondered whether this was the beginning.<\/p>\n

Maybe I had driven somewhere and forgotten.<\/p>\n

Because I was afraid the problem was me.<\/p>\n

Finally, I drove the truck to Dave\u2019s Auto.<\/p>\n

Dave had repaired our family cars for nearly twenty years.<\/p>\n

Big fellow.<\/p>\n

Quiet.<\/p>\n

Grease permanently embedded in his hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s happening, Frank?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy gas keeps disappearing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisappearing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI fill the tank. Barely drive anywhere. Three or four days later, half of it\u2019s gone. I think I\u2019ve got a leak.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dave frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat much fuel leaking, you\u2019d smell it from your porch.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t smell anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLeave it with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walt drove me home.<\/p>\n

All afternoon, I waited for Dave\u2019s call.<\/p>\n

Part of me hoped he\u2019d say the tank was rusted through.<\/p>\n
