Then one Saturday, a new barber stopped halfway through the haircut, stared behind Ethan\u2019s ear, and quietly told me,<\/p>\n

\u201cCheck that when you get home. Somewhere private.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ten minutes later, I found a tiny black object hidden against my son\u2019s skin.<\/p>\n

Twenty minutes after that, two police cars were parked outside my house.<\/p>\n

And before the day was over, I learned that someone had been using my son\u2019s grief over his dead father to set up something far worse than I could have imagined.<\/p>\n

It began like any other Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

Tony had been cutting Ethan\u2019s hair since he was seven.<\/p>\n

Ethan trusted him, which mattered because my son has never been quick to warm up to people.<\/p>\n

We arrived a little before ten.<\/p>\n

Tony was still working on another customer when Ethan dropped dramatically into a waiting chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou ate two waffles an hour ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another barber laughed.<\/p>\n

He was younger than Tony, maybe around thirty, with tattoos covering both forearms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can take him,\u201d he said. \u201cBefore he starves to death in the lobby.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hesitated.<\/p>\n

Tony noticed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s good, Megan,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s Marcus. He\u2019s been helping out here for a few weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcus settled him into the chair, fastened the cape, and started cutting.<\/p>\n

Everything was normal.<\/p>\n

For about fifteen minutes.<\/p>\n

Ethan talked nonstop.<\/p>\n

Soccer.<\/p>\n

School.<\/p>\n

A boy in his class who had eaten a crayon on a dare.<\/p>\n

Marcus joked with him and asked all the usual questions.<\/p>\n

I sat nearby answering emails on my phone.<\/p>\n

Every few minutes, I glanced up.<\/p>\n

Then Marcus began trimming behind Ethan\u2019s left ear.<\/p>\n

The clippers stopped.<\/p>\n

At almost the same moment, Ethan stopped talking.<\/p>\n

That was what caught my attention.<\/p>\n

Marcus moved Ethan\u2019s hair aside with his fingers.<\/p>\n

Then he stared.<\/p>\n

Not the quick look someone gives a mole or a scratch.<\/p>\n

He was studying something.<\/p>\n

Finally, he looked at me through the mirror.<\/p>\n

His expression had completely changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Marcus gave the smallest shake of his head.<\/p>\n

Then he finished the haircut.<\/p>\n

But the joking was over.<\/p>\n

He worked quietly.<\/p>\n

Quickly.<\/p>\n

And something uncomfortable started growing in my chest.<\/p>\n

When he was finished, Ethan jumped down and immediately ran toward the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom! Can I get a quarter for the candy machine?\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could answer, he was already outside staring at the machine through the glass.<\/p>\n

Marcus brushed loose hair off the chair.<\/p>\n

Then, without looking directly at me, he said quietly,<\/p>\n

I frowned.<\/p>\n
