He was thirty-six, six-foot-four, tattooed from wrists to shoulders, usually dressed in black, and played bass in a local band.<\/p>\n

For two weeks, we survived on after-school care, favors from other parents, and what little patience I had left.<\/p>\n

He glanced at his leather vest.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood point. I\u2019ll wear a tiara.\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled for what felt like the first time all week.<\/p>\n

We handled everything properly. The school copied his ID, I completed the authorization forms, and Travis was officially added to Emma\u2019s pickup list.<\/p>\n

Emma thought it was the greatest thing that had ever happened to her.<\/p>\n

Ryan did not.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want our daughter depending on some biker every afternoon,\u201d he said the first night.<\/p>\n

Every afternoon, Travis walked Emma home.<\/p>\n

She loved those walks and talked about them constantly at dinner.<\/p>\n

\u201cTravis showed me how motorcycle engines work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTravis says crows remember faces.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTravis knows how to whistle with two fingers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, on a Tuesday, everything changed.<\/p>\n

I was at my desk when my phone rang.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, can you come to school right now?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood immediately. \u201cIs Emma okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma is okay\u2026\u201d Then her voice dropped. \u201cIt\u2019s about the man who picks her up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every warning Ryan had given me rushed back at once.<\/p>\n

I barely remembered the drive. By the time I reached the school, my hands ached from gripping the steering wheel.<\/p>\n

Emma\u2019s teacher met me near the front office.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome with me. The principal will explain.\u201d<\/p>\n

She opened the office door.<\/p>\n

The principal stood. \u201cMa\u2019am, there seems to be some confusion about pickup today. Your sister-in-law arrived to collect Emma this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward Melissa.<\/p>\n

She raised both hands. \u201cRyan told me to.\u201d<\/p>\n

The principal continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe told our staff that Emma\u2019s father had authorized her pickup. Emma refused to leave with her. Shortly afterward, Mr. Travis arrived for his regular pickup.\u201d<\/p>\n
