Melissa had always been the successful one in the family.<\/p>\n

Big house.<\/p>\n

Luxury vacations.<\/p>\n

A husband who owned several dental clinics.<\/p>\n

So naturally, I expected her to make a big production out of Mom\u2019s birthday gift.<\/p>\n

Instead, she opened her expensive purse, pulled out a twenty-dollar bill, slipped it into a birthday card, and handed it across the table.<\/p>\n

Then she laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt her age, she doesn\u2019t really need much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom smiled politely.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

But I noticed what she did next.<\/p>\n

She folded the card quickly and slid it beneath her plate.<\/p>\n

Something about that small movement bothered me.<\/p>\n

Not because twenty dollars wasn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t about the amount.<\/p>\n

It was about everything Mom had done for Melissa over the years.<\/p>\n

Mom had babysat Melissa\u2019s children without ever accepting payment.<\/p>\n

She had cooked dinners when Melissa worked late.<\/p>\n

She had helped whenever the family needed something.<\/p>\n

And years earlier, when Melissa and her husband were trying to buy their first home, Mom had even dipped into her retirement savings to help them.<\/p>\n

So hearing Melissa joke that a seventy-year-old woman \u201cdidn\u2019t need much\u201d made my blood boil.<\/p>\n

I almost confronted her right there at the table.<\/p>\n

Then I remembered something.<\/p>\n

A wooden box in Mom\u2019s bedroom.<\/p>\n

Months earlier, while helping her clean out a closet, I had seen what was inside.<\/p>\n

Old report cards.<\/p>\n

Childhood drawings.<\/p>\n

Photographs.<\/p>\n

Hospital bracelets.<\/p>\n

Mother\u2019s Day cards.<\/p>\n

And two small notebooks filled with dates and numbers I hadn\u2019t understood.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, I had an idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom,\u201d I said, \u201cI actually forgot your real present at home. Can we do gifts again tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou forgot her birthday present?\u201d<\/p>\n

I ignored her.<\/p>\n

The following afternoon, everyone came back for leftover cake.<\/p>\n

This time, I placed a large wrapped box in front of Mom.<\/p>\n

Melissa leaned back with an amused expression.<\/p>\n
