The foreclosure notice lay beneath the living room light like a charge against me. Mr. Benson\u2019s name was printed across the top in the bank\u2019s rigid typeface, with \u201cFINAL\u201d stamped below as if the message weren\u2019t painful enough already.<\/p>\n

I read it twice before exhaling.<\/p>\n

Three payments behind. Fourteen days to respond.<\/p>\n

In my bedroom, I stepped onto the closet stool and reached for the shoebox on the highest shelf. Under an old birthday card sat the envelope Mom had handed me three years earlier.<\/p>\n

Years of taking it out and returning it had softened the paper.<\/p>\n

I brought it to the bedroom table as carefully as something priceless.<\/p>\n

Before opening it, my thoughts carried me somewhere gentler.<\/p>\n

I pictured our old duplex, Mom\u2014Georgia\u2014standing at the counter with her coupon binder spread open, tongue tucked between her teeth while she clipped coupons with surgical focus.<\/p>\n

\u201cSienna, come here,\u201d she\u2019d call. \u201cTwo-for-one on the good spaghetti. That\u2019s a party!\u201d<\/p>\n

The memory made me grin.<\/p>\n

Mom raised me alone without ever complaining. Our birthday cakes came from whatever the pantry offered. If pancakes were the best we could manage, she\u2019d stack them, stick a candle on top, and sing until I somehow felt like the wealthiest kid alive.<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t have much, but I never felt deprived.<\/p>\n

Mom stretched every dollar, so unnecessary purchases were rare. We were incredibly close, and she had a way of making our modest life feel full.<\/p>\n

That made her illness years later much harder to bear.<\/p>\n

The following six months were brutal. I practically relocated to her living room. I slept in the recliner beside her bed, drove her to appointments before sunrise, kept the house running, and memorized medication names I hoped would eventually fade from memory.<\/p>\n
