Then I opened my contacts and found one name.<\/p>\n

Melissa\u2019s husband.<\/p>\n

Ryan.<\/p>\n

I sent him all five pictures along with a location pin.<\/p>\n

Bellmont Hotel. 3:17 p.m.<\/p>\n

Thirty seconds later, he replied.<\/p>\n

Are you sure that\u2019s today?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m standing across the street.<\/p>\n

Three dots appeared.<\/p>\n

Vanished.<\/p>\n

Then appeared again.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t leave.<\/p>\n

I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n

People had always confused my silence with weakness.<\/p>\n

Daniel certainly had.<\/p>\n

For eleven years, he\u2019d introduced me as \u201cthe quiet one.\u201d At parties, he interrupted me, corrected me, and sometimes joked about how helpless I\u2019d be without him.<\/p>\n

Melissa always laughed the hardest.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d been my closest friend since college.<\/p>\n

When my mother died, Melissa held my hand through the funeral.<\/p>\n

When Daniel and I nearly lost our home because of his failed restaurant investment, she showed up with groceries.<\/p>\n

I stared across the street at the hotel.<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n

Then I heard shouting behind him.<\/p>\n

Melissa\u2019s voice cut through the noise.<\/p>\n

His breathing changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you send Ryan something?\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time that afternoon, I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would you ask me that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire, listen to me\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

He still chose badly.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not what it looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down at the photograph of his lips pressed against hers.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

I ended the call.<\/p>\n

Then I walked home.<\/p>\n

Daniel thought adultery was the worst secret he\u2019d hidden from me.<\/p>\n
