We found Celia waiting near the excursion check-in area, a towel folded over her arms and her goggles hanging from one wrist.<\/p>\n

Her son, Asher, was nine.<\/p>\n

Celia was eleven.<\/p>\n

And Celia had been talking about this excursion for weeks.<\/p>\n

Snorkeling.<\/p>\n

Boat rides.<\/p>\n

Swimming.<\/p>\n

She had chosen her swimsuit days earlier and packed her goggles herself.<\/p>\n

She had been genuinely excited.<\/p>\n

Now everyone else was enjoying the activity while she had been left behind because somebody decided her disappointment would be easier to manage than Asher\u2019s tantrum.<\/p>\n

Daniel went completely still beside me.<\/p>\n

Then she looked at us.<\/p>\n

Not angry.<\/p>\n

Not dramatic.<\/p>\n

Just disappointed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes this count?\u201d<\/p>\n

I knew exactly what she meant.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill you do what you promised?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it counts.\u201d<\/p>\n

A tiny smile appeared on her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three hours later, the entire family was trying to reach us.<\/p>\n

But the promise Celia was talking about had started long before that cruise.<\/p>\n

Daniel and I had always tried to teach her that family should make you feel respected.<\/p>\n

Not perfect.<\/p>\n

Not constantly agreed with.<\/p>\n

But respected.<\/p>\n

Over the years, however, there had been too many moments when Celia was expected to give way simply because she was quieter than the other children.<\/p>\n

At Thanksgiving, the cousins wanted to choose the movie.<\/p>\n

Celia suggested one.<\/p>\n

Asher complained until everyone changed it.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust let him pick,\u201d Jill said. \u201cIt\u2019s easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

At another gathering, the children were choosing bedrooms.<\/p>\n

Celia selected one first.<\/p>\n

Then another cousin decided she wanted it.<\/p>\n

Again, an adult told Celia,<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re older. Be flexible.\u201d<\/p>\n

At birthdays, she was often the child expected to share first.<\/p>\n

Wait longer.<\/p>\n

Give something up.<\/p>\n

Avoid making a fuss.<\/p>\n

None of those moments seemed huge by themselves.<\/p>\n

That was why we kept overlooking them.<\/p>\n

Celia was calm.<\/p>\n

Patient.<\/p>\n

Easygoing.<\/p>\n

And people began treating those qualities as permission to always put her second.<\/p>\n
