I told him I\u2019d think about it.<\/p>\n

But the truth was, I thought about almost nothing else for the rest of the night.<\/p>\n

At sunrise the following morning, I drove straight to Colfax.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t call ahead.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t make an appointment.<\/p>\n

I simply walked into the county child placement center and asked about the baby girl Greg had mentioned.<\/p>\n

The receptionist disappeared into the back.<\/p>\n

Diagnosis confirmed four days after birth.<\/p>\n

Then I turned to the second page.<\/p>\n

And stopped.<\/p>\n

I read one line.<\/p>\n

Then read it again.<\/p>\n

Slowly, I looked toward the desk.<\/p>\n
