My hair had reached almost to my waist for more than thirty years.<\/p>\n

My late husband, Richard, used to brush it for me when chemotherapy left his hands too weak to do much else.<\/p>\n

After he died, keeping my hair long became one of the small ways I kept a piece of him with me.<\/p>\n

Now one side still fell below my shoulder.<\/p>\n

The other had been cut almost to my ear.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

My own son looked at me without a trace of shame.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou needed a lesson, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those words hurt more than what Vanessa had done.<\/p>\n

Three months earlier, Daniel and Vanessa had asked if they could stay in my house \u201ctemporarily\u201d after Daniel\u2019s business failed.<\/p>\n

I gave them the guest suite.<\/p>\n

I bought groceries.<\/p>\n

I never charged them rent.<\/p>\n

At first, I thought I was helping my only child get back on his feet.<\/p>\n

Then Vanessa slowly began behaving as though the house belonged to her.<\/p>\n

She replaced furniture in my living room without asking.<\/p>\n

She threw away Richard\u2019s old coffee mug because she said it looked \u201ccheap.\u201d<\/p>\n

She invited friends over and introduced me as \u201cthe elderly relative who lives upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was sixty-one.<\/p>\n
