I went from being incredibly proud of my child to absolutely terrified in less than a minute.<\/p>\n

My son, Justin, is twelve.<\/p>\n

He isn\u2019t one of those children parents describe as perfect while everyone else quietly knows better.<\/p>\n

Justin forgets homework.<\/p>\n

He leaves wet towels on his bedroom floor.<\/p>\n

And somehow, no matter how many times I explain it, he still thinks an empty cereal box belongs back inside the pantry.<\/p>\n

But Justin has always had a kind heart.<\/p>\n

That summer, I discovered just how kind.<\/p>\n

A few days after school ended, I was standing in the kitchen when I noticed him pushing our old lawn mower down the sidewalk.<\/p>\n

I opened the window.<\/p>\n

He stopped and looked back.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Hall needs help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs. Hall lived four houses away. She was seventy-eight, fiercely independent, and apparently had decided that ninety-degree weather was perfectly reasonable for mowing a lawn.<\/p>\n

Justin had seen her struggling outside.<\/p>\n

An hour later, he returned home with his shirt soaked through with sweat.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe tried to give me twenty dollars,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you take it?\u201d<\/p>\n

He stared at me like I had insulted him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n

That answer told me enough.<\/p>\n

The next morning, while eating breakfast, he suddenly asked, \u201cDo you think there are other older people around here who need their yards done?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin nodded slowly, almost as though I had just confirmed an idea he had already been considering.<\/p>\n

And just like that, he had a summer project.<\/p>\n

Two or three times a week, Justin pushed our ancient mower around the neighborhood and offered to help elderly residents who couldn\u2019t easily manage their yards anymore.<\/p>\n

Naturally, I gave him rules.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t allowed inside strangers\u2019 houses.<\/p>\n

His phone had to stay charged.<\/p>\n

And I needed to know where he was going.<\/p>\n

At the time, those rules seemed perfectly reasonable.<\/p>\n

I never considered that the real problem might be everything Justin wasn\u2019t telling me.<\/p>\n

Within weeks, people around the neighborhood had started referring to him as \u201cthe lawn kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

And I was ridiculously proud.<\/p>\n

Then August arrived.<\/p>\n

One Thursday morning, Justin tied his shoes and announced that he had one more lawn to finish.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDorothy\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

The name sounded vaguely familiar.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere does Dorothy live?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe little blue house near the end of Hawthorne.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBe home before lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin gave me a dramatic salute.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cYes, commander.\u201d<\/p>\n

He came back about an hour later.<\/p>\n

Nothing seemed unusual.<\/p>\n

He showered, made two grilled cheese sandwiches, complained because one side of the bread was burned, ate both sandwiches anyway, and then protested for nearly an hour because I made him organize his school supplies.<\/p>\n

It was painfully ordinary.<\/p>\n

Then two police cars pulled up outside our house.<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cJustin.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked up from the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStay here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Naturally, he followed me anyway.<\/p>\n

By the time I opened the front door, two officers were already walking up our path.<\/p>\n

Both looked serious.<\/p>\n

The older officer glanced past me.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, is your son the boy who\u2019s been mowing lawns around the neighborhood?\u201d<\/p>\n

Every terrible possibility entered my mind at once.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin stepped beside me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t break anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

The officer looked directly at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJustin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you been visiting a small blue house near the end of Hawthorne Street?\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cDorothy\u2019s house?\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands started trembling.<\/p>\n

The second officer asked, \u201cHow well do you know Dorothy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mow her lawn.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n

That tiny hesitation frightened me more than the police cars.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat else, Justin?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust little stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

The officers exchanged a glance.<\/p>\n

The older one took out his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe found several notes in Dorothy\u2019s kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n

He showed us photographs.<\/p>\n

One note read:<\/p>\n

JUSTIN COMES TUESDAY.<\/p>\n

Another:<\/p>\n

ASK JUSTIN ABOUT THE MAILBOX.<\/p>\n

And another:<\/p>\n

JUSTIN KNOWS WHERE THE GARDEN KEY IS.<\/p>\n

For one horrifying second, I wondered whether this elderly woman had somehow confused my twelve-year-old with an adult caretaker.<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin shifted uncomfortably.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe forgets things sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does that even mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

Before he could answer, the officer lowered his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cDorothy was found several blocks away from her home this morning. She was confused and couldn\u2019t tell us where she lived.\u201d<\/p>\n
