My daughter spent years avoiding dates and photographs because of the birthmark on her face. So when she brought home the man she planned to marry, I watched him closely.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Dinner went perfectly until Marissa left the room.<\/p>\n

Then Graham leaned toward me and mentioned a deal I knew nothing about.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, those are the fancy plates.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down at the china in my hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re eating lasagna.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, dear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marissa stared at me from the kitchen doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cMari, your mother has been rearranging those plates for 20 minutes,\u201d Henry said from my phone, where I had him on speaker. \u201cDon\u2019t interfere with the process.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glared at the screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were supposed to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Henry sounded genuinely miserable.<\/p>\n

His work trip had run one day longer than expected, which meant the man my daughter intended to marry was coming to dinner for the first time while Henry was four hours away.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll meet him tomorrow,\u201d he promised. \u201cProperly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marissa checked the clock.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s going to be here in 10 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she touched one of her earrings.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this too much?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou look beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marissa gave me a small smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n

Marissa had been born with a dark reddish birthmark covering much of the left side of her face.<\/p>\n

When she was little, she didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n

At four, she once drew herself with a purple crayon covering half her face because, according to her, \u201cpurple is prettier than red.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she started school.<\/p>\n

Other children taught her to notice.<\/p>\n

By seven, she knew which side of class photographs she preferred standing on.<\/p>\n

By eleven, she knew how to angle her face whenever someone raised a camera.<\/p>\n

At fourteen, she stopped letting me photograph her unless she could approve the picture afterward.<\/p>\n

Dating terrified her even more.<\/p>\n

Her biological father had disappeared years earlier, leaving me to explain why one man who was supposed to love her had chosen not to stay.<\/p>\n

Henry entered our lives later.<\/p>\n

He never tried to replace anyone.<\/p>\n

He simply kept showing up.<\/p>\n

And he never treated Marissa like a stepdaughter.<\/p>\n

Eventually, she stopped waiting for him to disappear too.<\/p>\n

Still, she never brought boys home.<\/p>\n

Not once.<\/p>\n

Then six months ago, she called me.<\/p>\n

Something in her voice made me sit down.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom\u2026 I met somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that somebody was standing on my porch.<\/p>\n

I opened the door.<\/p>\n

Graham was handsome in an almost annoyingly effortless way.<\/p>\n

For one ugly second, a thought slipped into my head.<\/p>\n

Please don\u2019t let this be some joke.<\/p>\n

I hated myself for thinking it.<\/p>\n

Graham held out a bottle of wine.<\/p>\n

\u201cMercy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Graham.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could answer, Marissa appeared behind me.<\/p>\n

\u201cMari,\u201d Graham said, smiling.<\/p>\n

His entire face brightened when he saw her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mom actually let you bring dessert?\u201d<\/p>\n

Marissa rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat wasn\u2019t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n

She smacked his arm.<\/p>\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n
