“Is this Claire Bennett?”

The unfamiliar woman on the phone sounded nervous.

“Yes.”

A short silence followed.

“My name is Sophie Weber.”

Everything around me seemed to fade.

The hiss of the espresso machine.

The clatter of cups.

The conversations filling the coffee shop.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“I think we need to talk,” Sophie said.

I stared down at the notes spread across the table in front of me—dates of Julian’s business trips, late meetings, unexplained weekends.

“How did you get my number?”

“From Julian’s phone.”

My stomach tightened.

“He left it in my apartment Saturday morning. Your number was listed as his emergency contact. I copied it before he came back.”

Saturday morning.

Julian had told me he was meeting a client.

Another lie.

“Why are you calling me?”

Sophie hesitated.

Then she said something I wasn’t prepared for.

“Because I heard what his family is planning.”

My fingers went cold.

“You understand German?”

“I’m German.”

Of course she was.

“Tell me.”

“Not over the phone.”

She gave me the name of a bakery about twenty minutes away.

“Come alone.”

“I will.”

“And Claire?”

“Yes?”

“Don’t tell Julian I called.”

Then the line went dead.

For half a minute, I didn’t move.

Until that moment, I had been hurt.

Now I was alert.

Because Sophie hadn’t sounded like a woman proud of stealing someone else’s husband.

She had sounded frightened.

I arrived at the bakery before her and chose a table facing the entrance.

About ten minutes later, a tall blonde woman walked in wearing a loose gray coat.

I recognized her immediately from old photos buried deep in Julian’s social media.

But there was one difference.

Sophie was visibly pregnant.

She spotted me and stopped.

Then she slowly walked over.

“Claire?”

I nodded.

She sat.

Neither of us spoke at first.

Finally, Sophie placed her phone on the table.

“I’m sorry.”

The words almost made me laugh.

“You’ve been sleeping with my husband for five months.”

Her eyes met mine.

“Eight.”

The honesty hurt worse than an excuse.

“Eight months?”

“Yes.”

Eight months.

While I was going through fertility treatment.

While Julian drove me to appointments.

While he held ice packs against my stomach after injections.

While he promised me we would eventually have the family we had spent years trying to build.

Sophie swallowed.

“I knew he was married.”

“Then don’t insult me by pretending you didn’t know what you were doing.”

“I’m not.”

That answer stopped me.

She continued quietly.

“Julian told me your marriage had been dead for years. He said you stayed together because separating your finances and selling the house would be complicated.”

I gave a hollow laugh.

“He took me to Paris for our anniversary two years ago.”

Her face changed.

“He told me you slept in separate bedrooms.”

“We don’t.”

“He said you refused intimacy.”

“He was holding my hand in a fertility clinic six weeks ago.”

For the first time, Sophie looked genuinely shocked.

Then she unlocked her phone.

“There’s more.”

She pushed it toward me.

Screenshots of messages from Julian.

I began reading.

One message said that after the baby arrived, I would eventually “come around.”

Another said I wanted a child so badly that once I bonded with the baby, I wouldn’t leave.

Then I read:

“Mom says we have to handle this carefully. Claire can’t know you and I plan to be together eventually.”

And another:

“She has the house, the insurance, and the better job. It makes sense for the baby to stay there at first.”

I stopped.

The house was mine before Julian.

My grandmother had helped me with the down payment.

My salary covered most of the mortgage.

Our medical insurance came through my employer.

Suddenly, the conversation I had overheard days earlier made horrifying sense.

His family wasn’t joking about making me raise Sophie’s baby.

They meant it literally.

“You knew about this?” I asked.

“Not all of it.”

“You were going to let me raise your child?”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“I thought he was leaving you before the baby was born.”

“And now?”

“Now I don’t think he ever planned to leave you.”

She told me she had overheard Julian arguing with his mother, Helga.

Helga believed divorcing me would be foolish.

My income was useful.

My house was useful.

My health insurance was useful.

And after everything I had endured trying to become a mother, Helga apparently believed I would accept Sophie’s son because I would be desperate enough to view him as some kind of miracle.

I felt sick.

“Julian told her I might leave,” Sophie continued.

“What did she say?”

“That you wouldn’t.”

“Why?”

Sophie looked uncomfortable.

“Because they had made sure you couldn’t.”

Then she showed me another screenshot.

A message from Helga.

“If Claire becomes difficult, remind Julian about the account. She cannot afford a fight once she realizes what he has done.”

I stared at the screen.

“What account?”

“I hoped you knew.”

I didn’t.

But suddenly I remembered things I had ignored.

Bank statements Julian kept hidden in his office.

A transfer he called an automatic investment.

Tax papers he insisted on handling himself.

I stood.

“I need to go.”

“Claire.”

I turned.

“I know you have no reason to trust me,” Sophie said.

“You’re right.”

“But before you confront him, check your money.”

I studied her.

“Why are you helping me?”

Her hand moved over her stomach.
