Melanie stepped outside laughing at something on her phone.<\/p>\n

Then she noticed my car.<\/p>\n

Her smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

Even from a distance, I could see her squinting in my direction.<\/p>\n

She said something to someone inside before disappearing back through the doorway.<\/p>\n

That was my cue.<\/p>\n

I drove away.<\/p>\n

I had already booked a small hotel as a backup because some part of me had apparently known this visit could go badly.<\/p>\n
