My 12-year-old daughter sent me a smiling photo from scout camp to prove everything was fine. At first, I felt relieved. Then I noticed something disturbing in the background: a person who wasn\u2019t supposed to be there. I called my daughter twice. When she didn\u2019t answer, I called the camp.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

My daughter, Ava, is twelve, and until this summer, she\u2019d given me almost no reason to ever be suspicious of her.<\/p>\n

She stared at me.<\/p>\n

I stared back.<\/p>\n

Then she reached into her backpack and pulled out the sunscreen.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

She had already lost the cap.<\/p>\n

Neither of us spoke for a moment.<\/p>\n

I laughed, and eventually agreed to let her go.<\/p>\n

It would be her first time away from home for more than a single night.<\/p>\n

The first two days were much harder on me than they seemed to be on her.<\/p>\n

Phones were discouraged during camp activities, so I tried not to message her constantly. The first night, I received one short text.<\/p>\n

Made it. Cabin is small. Food is weird. Love you.<\/p>\n

The second night, there was nothing.<\/p>\n

I told myself that was probably a good sign.<\/p>\n

She was busy.<\/p>\n

Then, on the third day, my phone buzzed while I was eating lunch at my desk.<\/p>\n

She stood smiling near a group of picnic tables with several girls from her troop behind her.<\/p>\n

I knew Maddie because her mother, Beth, and I had spent twenty minutes talking in the parking lot before the girls left for camp.<\/p>\n

And I knew Maddie wasn\u2019t supposed to be there anymore.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Beth had called me the previous night.<\/p>\n

Maddie had gotten sick and gone home.<\/p>\n

I zoomed in on the photo.<\/p>\n

Definitely Maddie.<\/p>\n

Maybe the message had been delayed.<\/p>\n

Maybe there was some obvious explanation I hadn\u2019t considered.<\/p>\n

I called the camp office.<\/p>\n

A woman answered with the calm, practiced voice of someone accustomed to dealing with anxious parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi. My daughter is there with her troop. Her name is Ava.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course. Is everything okay?\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

That answer immediately changed her tone.<\/p>\n

She transferred me to Ava\u2019s group counselor, Marissa.<\/p>\n

I explained what I\u2019d noticed in the photograph.<\/p>\n

Then I texted the picture to the number she gave me.<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n

A long one.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, that\u2019s why I called.\u201d I stood up from my desk. \u201cWhere\u2019s Ava?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s in the health cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe reported an injury this morning. Nothing serious. She said she twisted her ankle and couldn\u2019t participate in activities.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared blankly at the wall.<\/p>\n

Ava\u2019s message was still open on my phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe told me she just finished training.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand, but\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
