Megan didn\u2019t even lift her eyes from her phone.<\/p>\n

As though fifteen guests didn\u2019t mean days of grocery shopping, piles of linens, two guest rooms, the basement sofa, borrowed folding chairs, and hours of cooking until my knees ached.<\/p>\n

I set the frosting knife down.<\/p>\n

My five-year-old grandson, Oliver, was sitting on the floor nearby building a tower from blocks. He was sweet, loving, and the main reason I had tolerated so many holidays that left me exhausted and resentful.<\/p>\n

\u201cFifteen people,\u201d I repeated.<\/p>\n

Megan finally looked up.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a big deal, Mom. Ryan\u2019s family expects a real Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n

A real Christmas.<\/p>\n

That was what they called my unpaid work when they wanted to disguise it as tradition.<\/p>\n

For seven years, ever since Megan married Ryan, my house had served as his family\u2019s holiday hotel.<\/p>\n

His parents usually arrived first, and Ryan\u2019s mother took my bedroom because she had \u201ca sensitive back.\u201d<\/p>\n

His brothers helped themselves to everything in my pantry.<\/p>\n

His cousins left their children in the den while they disappeared to watch football.<\/p>\n

Ryan handed me requests as if I were staff.<\/p>\n

Extra towels.<\/p>\n

More ice.<\/p>\n

Gluten-free stuffing.<\/p>\n

Separate desserts.<\/p>\n

Breakfast casserole by eight.<\/p>\n

And every year, Megan stood beside them with an apologetic smile and whispered, \u201cPlease, Mom. It\u2019s only once a year.\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Except it was never only once a year.<\/p>\n

There was Easter.<\/p>\n

Fourth of July.<\/p>\n

Birthdays.<\/p>\n

Weekend visits.<\/p>\n

Whenever Ryan\u2019s family needed meals, childcare, or a large clean house to absorb everyone, Megan called me as though love meant never charging anyone a cost.<\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere will everyone sleep?\u201d<\/p>\n

She shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her expression tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, don\u2019t start.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the sentence that once would have made me stop talking.<\/p>\n

I would have worried about looking selfish.<\/p>\n

I would have imagined Oliver upset because Grandma had ruined Christmas.<\/p>\n

Then I would have bought more food, washed more sheets, and smiled politely while Ryan\u2019s mother corrected the way I set my own table.<\/p>\n

But that morning was different.<\/p>\n

Earlier, I had found the Christmas group chat Megan had forgotten to hide after borrowing my tablet.<\/p>\n

Ryan had written:<\/p>\n

Your mom will do it. She always does.<\/p>\n

His mother had replied:<\/p>\n

Good. Saves us a fortune.<\/p>\n

Then Megan wrote:<\/p>\n

Just let me tell her last minute. She won\u2019t say no if Oliver\u2019s excited.<\/p>\n

I dried my hands on a towel and smiled.<\/p>\n
