At 8:57 the following morning, Adrian entered Vale Meridian\u2019s glass conference room expecting an ordinary board meeting.<\/p>\n

By 9:03, he understood that everyone around the table was waiting for me.<\/p>\n

I walked in accompanied by Margaret Hale, two attorneys, the forensic accountant, and a representative from the bank.<\/p>\n

The color drained from Adrian\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaret took the seat at the head of the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccountability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire had insisted on attending as Adrian\u2019s \u201cstrategic adviser.\u201d She leaned toward him and whispered something.<\/p>\n

He snapped, \u201cEvelyn has no authority here.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed the voting trust on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have twenty-eight percent.\u201d<\/p>\n

One investor raised his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has my proxy.\u201d<\/p>\n

A second followed.<\/p>\n

Then a third.<\/p>\n

For a moment, Adrian seemed unable to breathe.<\/p>\n

I continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether, we control fifty-six percent of voting power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire\u2019s hand dropped from his shoulder.<\/p>\n

Adrian jumped to his feet so quickly that his chair struck the wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a setup.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cA setup is billing your own company through a shell corporation controlled by your girlfriend\u2019s brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

The forensic accountant opened a binder.<\/p>\n

Inside were bank transfers, false invoices, emails, loan documents, dates, and signatures.<\/p>\n

Every lie Adrian assumed I had been too obedient to notice had been documented and arranged chronologically.<\/p>\n

He reached for the binder.<\/p>\n

His attorney caught his arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

That one word stopped him more effectively than any argument could have.<\/p>\n

Eleven minutes later, the board voted.<\/p>\n

Adrian was removed as CEO for cause.<\/p>\n

The bank froze further lending and referred the suspected fraud to investigators. The board also authorized civil action to recover the missing funds.<\/p>\n

Claire began crying.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was Adrian\u2019s idea,\u201d she blurted. \u201cI didn\u2019t know what my brother was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her brother\u2019s emails indicated otherwise.<\/p>\n

Once Adrian removed me, those licenses reverted under contractual clauses he had never bothered to read.<\/p>\n

The board hired my firm to help rebuild the company.<\/p>\n
