My eight-year-old son, Tyler, had always been closer to my mother than almost anyone else in our family.<\/p>\n

When Tyler was younger and I was raising him on my own, Mom stepped in wherever my work schedule left a gap. She packed his lunches whenever I had early shifts, helped him prepare for spelling tests, sat through his school concerts, and somehow managed to remember every strange little thing that mattered to him.<\/p>\n

Jason is four years younger than me. He runs a small contracting business and has always been charming, impulsive, and completely convinced that he can fix almost anything.<\/p>\n

After Mom\u2019s surgery, he seemed determined to make himself useful.<\/p>\n

He changed a light fixture I\u2019d been ignoring for six months.<\/p>\n

He brought groceries.<\/p>\n

He repaired the loose railing on the stairs.<\/p>\n

Whenever I needed to leave the house, he would say, \u201cGo. I\u2019ve got Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

I even gave him a spare key. With Mom recovering under my roof, it seemed practical to have another member of the family who could get inside quickly if something happened.<\/p>\n

I remember feeling grateful.<\/p>\n

If Jason went upstairs, Tyler followed him upstairs.<\/p>\n

I lowered my voice.<\/p>\n
