Dad opened his mouth, but nothing came out.<\/p>\n

Jason reacted first. \u201cThat\u2019s ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n

The managing partner\u2019s tone sharpened. \u201cJason, are you present?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked toward Dad like a child caught playing with matches.<\/p>\n

I lowered my phone slightly, keeping the audio clear.<\/p>\n

The partner continued, \u201cMia\u2019s counsel provided login records showing your firm credentials accessed draft patents, investor notes, and acquisition files from her private cloud.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s coffee mug trembled.<\/p>\n

Dad turned toward Jason. \u201cWhat is she talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jason swallowed. \u201cI was helping her. She was overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed then. \u201cYou copied my files after telling everyone I was wasting my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were quitting law school,\u201d Jason snapped. \u201cDad was right. You needed direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou needed leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two nights earlier, my attorney had called to warn me that someone had accessed my encrypted folder from a law firm IP address.<\/p>\n

At first, I thought it might be Dad.<\/p>\n

He had always treated privacy like disrespect.<\/p>\n

But the login traced back to Jason\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Then I discovered an email draft he had prepared for one of my investors, offering to \u201cassist with family oversight\u201d before the acquisition closed.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t trying to protect me.<\/p>\n

He was trying to insert himself into the deal before the money arrived.<\/p>\n

The managing partner said, \u201cRichard, we are suspending Jason\u2019s access pending investigation. Mia, your attorney has requested preservation of all related communications.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad lowered the phone slowly.<\/p>\n

For once, he seemed unsure who he was supposed to blame.<\/p>\n

Then a black car pulled up along the curb.<\/p>\n

My attorney stepped out carrying a folder, followed by two representatives from the acquisition team.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Hill finally stopped pretending to water the roses.<\/p>\n

Jason whispered, \u201cMia, don\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him, then at the suitcase Dad had ordered me to pack.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou already did.\u201d<\/p>\n

My attorney handed Dad a document.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Carter,\u201d she said, \u201cthis is formal notice that Mia Carter is the sole founder of the company your son accessed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad stared at the first page.<\/p>\n

Valuation: $19,000,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d really love to know what you think about this part. Your thoughts keep me motivated to continue the story.\u201d<\/p>\n
