It could cover the electric bill and still leave enough to put something toward next semester\u2019s tuition.<\/p>\n

For people like the couple sitting in my section that Friday night, $400 might have been the price of a nice dinner.<\/p>\n

For me, it was survival.<\/p>\n

I was attending college in a neighboring state, close enough to visit home when I had money for the trip but far enough away that every family emergency felt impossible to manage.<\/p>\n

I had been working as a waitress at a restaurant near campus for almost a year.<\/p>\n

Most evenings were a balancing act between classes, assignments, late shifts, and sending whatever money I could spare back home.<\/p>\n

And lately, \u201cwhatever I could spare\u201d had become almost everything.<\/p>\n

Because four months earlier, my mother had disappeared.<\/p>\n

Her name was Evelyn.<\/p>\n

Mom and I had always been close, even though she wasn\u2019t exactly the warm-and-fuzzy type.<\/p>\n

She was organized almost to a fault.<\/p>\n

Appointments were scheduled weeks ahead.<\/p>\n

Receipts were stored in labeled folders.<\/p>\n

She called me every Sunday evening at exactly eight.<\/p>\n

Even the kitchen towels had designated places.<\/p>\n

That was why her disappearance made absolutely no sense.<\/p>\n

She vanished without packing anything.<\/p>\n

Her purse was still at home.<\/p>\n

So was her phone.<\/p>\n

Her medication.<\/p>\n

Most of her clothes.<\/p>\n

There was no note.<\/p>\n

No message.<\/p>\n

No explanation.<\/p>\n

Anyone who knew my mother agreed on one thing:<\/p>\n

Evelyn Mercer would never simply walk away without telling somebody.<\/p>\n

I went home immediately.<\/p>\n

I spoke to the police repeatedly.<\/p>\n

They asked questions, filed reports, and told us they were looking into it.<\/p>\n

But there was no obvious evidence of a crime.<\/p>\n

Mom was an adult.<\/p>\n

And every possible lead seemed to disappear almost as soon as it appeared.<\/p>\n

We considered hiring a private investigator.<\/p>\n

So I did the only thing I knew how to do.<\/p>\n

I made posters.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of them.<\/p>\n

Bus stations.<\/p>\n

Coffee shops.<\/p>\n

Laundromats.<\/p>\n

Restaurants.<\/p>\n

All over campus.<\/p>\n

I carried extra copies inside my bag in case I met someone who might recognize her.<\/p>\n
