The empty plate in front of me wasn\u2019t a mistake. My mother-in-law set it down with such a cold smile that I understood immediately dinner had never really been about food.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The dining room smelled of garlic butter and roasted crab. Across from me, my sister-in-law Vanessa cracked open an enormous king crab leg while my mother-in-law, Diane, hovered nearby like a proud hostess.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly the premium Alaskan kind for Vanessa,\u201d Diane said loudly. \u201cShe appreciates quality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she placed an empty white plate in front of me.<\/p>\n

I stared at it. \u201cDid you forget mine?\u201d<\/p>\n

Diane laughed.<\/p>\n

My husband, Mark, suddenly found his wineglass fascinating.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, honey,\u201d Diane said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa smirked.<\/p>\n

Diane folded her hands. \u201cOur funds for you are exhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n

The table fell silent.<\/p>\n

For six years, I had quietly covered nearly everything Diane called a \u201cfamily emergency\u201d\u2014property taxes, roof repairs, medical copays, even the $4,800 furnace she claimed would leave her freezing if I didn\u2019t help.<\/p>\n

And now she was humiliating me over a plate of crab.<\/p>\n

Vanessa lifted a buttery piece of meat to her mouth. \u201cDon\u2019t be so sensitive, Claire. Mom\u2019s just being financially responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Mark.<\/p>\n

\u201cSay something.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sighed. \u201cMaybe Mom has a point. You\u2019ve been acting\u2026 entitled lately.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

I had done it because I believed marriage meant helping protect each other\u2019s families.<\/p>\n

Apparently, I had misunderstood the arrangement.<\/p>\n

Mark kicked my ankle beneath the table.<\/p>\n

I looked down at my empty plate.<\/p>\n

Then I smiled.<\/p>\n

That reaction disappointed them.<\/p>\n

Diane wanted tears. Vanessa wanted an argument. Mark expected an apology.<\/p>\n

Instead, I stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnjoy dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark followed me into the hallway.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re embarrassing me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned.<\/p>\n
