The room smelled of garlic butter and expensive wine, while birthday balloons tied to the back of my chair gently brushed against the ceiling.<\/p>\n

My parents had arranged the entire dinner, supposedly to celebrate me becoming a legal adult and preparing to leave for college.<\/p>\n

Directly across from me sat my older brother, Brandon, looking smug beside his wife, Jessica, whose hand rested possessively on his arm.<\/p>\n

I kept a polite smile on my face but remained guarded because family dinners usually came with some hidden agenda orchestrated by my mother.<\/p>\n

Halfway through the meal, before dessert had even arrived, my father loudly cleared his throat and rose from his chair.<\/p>\n

He tapped his water glass with a silver fork, immediately drawing the attention of all thirty-two relatives, who stopped eating and turned toward him.<\/p>\n

My heart gave an uneasy thud when I saw the cold, indifferent smirk on his face.<\/p>\n
