I expected the officer to laugh and leave.<\/p>\n

But after asking my son a few questions, he noticed something on our freezer calendar.<\/p>\n

What Tyler had drawn there completely changed the conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I have ice cream?\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced over my shoulder.<\/p>\n

Tyler was standing in front of the open freezer while I stirred spaghetti sauce on the stove.<\/p>\n

Cold air spilled around his bare feet.<\/p>\n

He stared into the freezer like he was studying his legal options.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face fell.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m hungry now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s convenient. Dinner is almost ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want spaghetti.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou loved spaghetti three days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was three days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned down the burner and faced him.<\/p>\n

My son was seven years old, stubborn enough to negotiate with gravity, and currently wearing only one sock because he had declared the other one \u201cuncomfortable emotionally.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClose the freezer.\u201d<\/p>\n

He finally did.<\/p>\n

Then he crossed his arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re the meanest mom in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll add it to my r\u00e9sum\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo do I. Ice cream comes after dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler stomped down the hallway.<\/p>\n

A second later, his bedroom door slammed.<\/p>\n

I shook my head and went back to cooking.<\/p>\n

Being a single mother meant choosing battles carefully.<\/p>\n

I was willing to negotiate ten extra minutes before bedtime.<\/p>\n

I occasionally pretended not to notice socks abandoned in the living room.<\/p>\n

But dessert before dinner was not something I negotiated.<\/p>\n

Twenty minutes later, someone knocked on the front door.<\/p>\n

I wiped my hands on a towel and opened it.<\/p>\n

A police officer was standing on my porch.<\/p>\n

For several seconds, my brain stopped working.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe received a call about a possible child-related issue at this address. I just need to check that everyone is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of issue?\u201d<\/p>\n

Before he could answer, Tyler appeared behind me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI called!\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned very slowly.<\/p>\n

My son marched toward us holding an old cell phone.<\/p>\n

It was a phone I kept charged for one specific reason.<\/p>\n

If I ever fainted, got hurt, or something serious happened while we were alone, Tyler knew he could use it to call for help.<\/p>\n

Apparently, he had developed his own interpretation of \u201cserious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom is being really mean,\u201d he announced. \u201cShe won\u2019t give me ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n

I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n

My child had called the police over dessert.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so sorry,\u201d I told the officer. \u201cI never imagined he would use the phone for something like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler looked offended.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m seven.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for reminding us.\u201d<\/p>\n

I expected the officer to laugh.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

His nameplate said BRUCE.<\/p>\n

Officer Bruce looked at Tyler, then back at me.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cWould you mind if I ask him a few questions?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease do.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that point, I was hoping an actual police officer might succeed where motherhood had failed and explain that chocolate ice cream was not a constitutional right.<\/p>\n

Officer Bruce crouched slightly so he was closer to Tyler\u2019s height.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid your mom hurt you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler immediately stopped acting dramatic.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you scared of her?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. She\u2019s my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have food in the house?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler pointed toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s literally making spaghetti.\u201d<\/p>\n

The smell of garlic and tomato sauce had already reached the hallway.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes she stop you from eating when you\u2019re hungry?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you feel unsafe here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI already said no.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officer Bruce nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay. Then there isn\u2019t an emergency. Tell me what you wanted the police to fix.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler answered without hesitation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wanted the porch to open up and swallow me.<\/p>\n

Instead of laughing, Officer Bruce sat on the edge of the step.<\/p>\n

\u201cTyler, when you call the police and tell us you need help, we have to take that seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was serious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That surprised me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut,\u201d Officer Bruce continued, \u201cthe police don\u2019t come every time something feels unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice fix unfair things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officer Bruce glanced at me.<\/p>\n

I gave a helpless shrug.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told him the police help people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom said if something bad happens, you call them,\u201d Tyler added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s true,\u201d Officer Bruce said. \u201cBut being disappointed isn\u2019t the same as being unsafe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler considered that.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your mom says you have to wait until after dinner for ice cream,\u201d Bruce continued, \u201cthat might feel unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVery unfair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it is not an emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler still looked unconvinced.<\/p>\n

Then Officer Bruce asked,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy was waiting such a big problem today?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause she waits too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

Officer Bruce looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mom waits too long for ice cream?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

My embarrassment disappeared.<\/p>\n

Now I was confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cTyler, what are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shoved his hands into his pockets.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You called the police because apparently I \u2018wait too much.\u2019 You are finishing that sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler looked toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Officer Bruce followed his gaze.<\/p>\n

From the doorway, part of our refrigerator was visible.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s that on the freezer?\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned.<\/p>\n

Our weekly calendar was held up by two magnets\u2014one shaped like a taco and another made from a broken plastic dinosaur Tyler had refused to let me throw away.<\/p>\n

Most of the squares contained normal things.<\/p>\n

Soccer practice.<\/p>\n

Laundry.<\/p>\n

Trash day.<\/p>\n

School library.<\/p>\n
