I thought I had spent eighteen years mourning one of my triplets. Then, on my sons’ birthday, a box appeared with “Happy Birthday, Brothers” written across the top, and the note inside led me back to the hospital, my mother, and a truth I was never meant to uncover.

I had only gone inside to finish frosting the cake.

Through the open kitchen window came the noise from the backyard—music, shouting, and the kind of laughter that seemed to belong naturally to eighteen-year-old boys.

My husband, Watson, walked in and kissed the side of my head.

“You okay?”

“I’m fine.”

His gaze shifted toward the cake.

Two large candles sat beside it.

One and eight.

Hidden behind the flour tin, where no one else could see it, was the tiny white candle I lit every year for Rowan.

Watson noticed where I was looking.

“I’ll light it with you later,” he said.

“After everyone leaves.”

He nodded.

We had never allowed Riley and Rex to grow up believing their brother had been forgotten.

Rowan was never a secret in our home.

He was one of our sons.

We had brought only two babies home from the hospital because Doctor Jefferson told us Rowan had died before he became strong enough to leave.

That was the truth I had lived with since the day they were born.

Then the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it, hon,” I said, wiping frosting from my thumb.

Watson glanced toward the backyard. “Probably another kid who forgot which gate to use.”

I walked to the front door expecting to find a teenager carrying a gift bag with grass stuck to his shoes.

Instead, the porch was empty.

A small brown box sat alone on the welcome mat.

There was no postage, no shipping label, and no return address.

Only four words written across the top in black marker.

“Happy Birthday, Brothers.”

My entire body went cold.

“Who is it?” Watson called from the kitchen.

“No one.”

I picked up the box.

It felt light, though something shifted inside when I moved it.

Watson stepped into the hallway and read the message.

“Maybe one of the boys ordered something.”

“No,” I said. “I’m taking it to our room. I don’t want them opening some cruel joke in front of everyone.”

His expression changed immediately.

He understood what those words had done to me.

I carried the box into our bedroom, closed the door, and sat on the edge of the bed.

For nearly a minute, I simply stared at it.

Then I lifted the lid.

A folded note lay on top.

“Dawn,

Please don’t show this to anyone until you finish reading.

Don’t trust Grandma.”

I stopped breathing.

Beneath the letter was a hospital bracelet.

Tiny.

Faded.

Yellowed around the edges.

The printed name on it was Rowan.

Behind the bracelet was a photograph of a young man standing near a lake.

He had Riley’s mouth.

Rex’s height.

Watson’s jaw.

And my eyes.

A sound escaped me that I had never heard myself make before.

Watson knocked.

“Dawn?”

I couldn’t answer.

“Dawn, open the door.”

My fingers shook as I unlocked it.

He walked inside and immediately saw the open box on the bed.

I raised the bracelet.

“It says Rowan.”

Watson’s face drained of color.

His gaze moved to the photograph before he dropped heavily onto the bed beside me.

“No.”

I handed him the letter.

“Read it.”

He shook his head.

“Watson. Read it.”

His voice cracked on the first sentence.

“My name is Rowan. I was told you loved my brothers but couldn’t love all three of us.”

Watson covered his mouth.
