I laughed.<\/p>\n

Not because it was funny.<\/p>\n

Because David hated changing anything.<\/p>\n

This was a man who had used the same chipped green coffee mug for ten years because, according to him, \u201cthe chip doesn\u2019t stop it from holding coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n

So when he suddenly wanted my side of the bed, I knew something was strange.<\/p>\n

I just didn\u2019t know how strange.<\/p>\n

My name is Ellen Carver. I\u2019m forty-four, a high school librarian, and I\u2019ve been with David for twenty years.<\/p>\n

Our marriage has always been comfortable.<\/p>\n

Predictable.<\/p>\n

Stable.<\/p>\n

Not boring\u2014at least not to me.<\/p>\n

The kind of predictable where you know exactly how your partner takes his coffee, where he leaves his keys, and which side of the bed he\u2019ll be on when you wake in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n

David had always slept on the right.<\/p>\n

I had always slept on the left.<\/p>\n

The arrangement started before we were married.<\/p>\n

In our first apartment, his side was beside the window. He ran warm and liked the cool air.<\/p>\n

My side was closer to the door, which made sense because I was more likely to get up during the night.<\/p>\n

When we eventually bought our house, we kept the same arrangement without even discussing it.<\/p>\n

Left was mine.<\/p>\n

Right was his.<\/p>\n

For seventeen years.<\/p>\n

Until that Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t been sleeping well,\u201d David explained. \u201cMaybe switching things around will help.\u201d<\/p>\n

I studied him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hate switching things around.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe alarm clock bothers me. When I can see it, I start counting how many hours I have left to sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

The alarm clock was on his nightstand.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf that\u2019s the problem,\u201d I said, \u201cjust turn it around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wouldn\u2019t be the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

That answer made absolutely no sense.<\/p>\n

But David had that expression on his face.<\/p>\n

The one he wore when he had already reached a conclusion.<\/p>\n

So I agreed.<\/p>\n

We switched.<\/p>\n

I hated it immediately.<\/p>\n

Everything felt wrong.<\/p>\n

The nightstand was in the wrong place.<\/p>\n

The bathroom seemed farther away even though it obviously wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

The light beneath the bedroom door looked different from that angle.<\/p>\n

David, meanwhile, fell asleep almost immediately.<\/p>\n

The next morning he asked,<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did you sleep?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTerribly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGive it a few nights.\u201d<\/p>\n

That bothered me.<\/p>\n

Not the sentence itself.<\/p>\n

The confidence behind it.<\/p>\n

Why was he so determined to make this permanent?<\/p>\n

The second night, I suggested switching back.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just that.<\/p>\n

No explanation.<\/p>\n

That was even stranger.<\/p>\n

David was an engineer.<\/p>\n
