The wake was being held at my mother-in-law\u2019s house in suburban Chicago. My husband, Mark, had supposedly died after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest at a small private clinic outside the city.<\/p>\n
He was thirty-nine.<\/p>\n
Completely healthy.<\/p>\n
And two days earlier, he had said something I could not stop replaying.<\/p>\n

Marcus was Mark\u2019s older brother and business partner in the cold-chain logistics company they had inherited from their father.<\/p>\n

I pulled out my phone and opened a picture I had taken at the clinic when they allowed me to say goodbye.<\/p>\n
In the photo, Mark\u2019s wristwatch showed 4:13 PM.<\/p>\n
I looked at the watch still on his wrist inside the casket.<\/p>\n

Still ticking.<\/p>\n
That did not mean he was alive.<\/p>\n
But it meant no one had properly removed or prepared his belongings.<\/p>\n
I bent close to Chloe.<\/p>\n

Before I could stop her, she leaned deeply over the edge of the casket and pressed her ear against Mark\u2019s chest.<\/p>\n
