Then she opened it and slid several pages toward me.<\/p>\n

My son Bradley, who had been staring out at the lake, finally turned around.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, Ashley put a lot of work into this.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sentence should have warned me.<\/p>\n

People usually emphasize how much work someone has done right before asking you to agree to something you never wanted.<\/p>\n

I sat down and looked at the first page.<\/p>\n

**Whitcomb Lake Cottage Family Use Agreement.**<\/p>\n

The word *family* appeared everywhere.<\/p>\n

Guests were supposed to clean before leaving.<\/p>\n

Bradley and Ashley would oversee maintenance.<\/p>\n

No extra visitors without approval.<\/p>\n

The upstairs bedroom would be reserved for \u201cprimary family use.\u201d<\/p>\n

Any scheduling disagreements would be handled by the \u201csummer coordinators.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho exactly are the summer coordinators?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ashley smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBradley and me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course.<\/p>\n

I kept reading.<\/p>\n

Then I reached one sentence that changed everything.<\/p>\n

**Owner occupancy should be scheduled in advance so it does not interfere with confirmed guest reservations.**<\/p>\n

Owner occupancy.<\/p>\n

Apparently I was no longer Marianne Whitcomb.<\/p>\n

I was simply \u201cthe owner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ashley tapped the page.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just to avoid surprises.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my own house?\u201d<\/p>\n

She gave me a patient smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour cottage, yes. But everyone uses it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word came out quietly.<\/p>\n

Bradley sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Everyone does not use this cottage. Everyone I invite uses it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ashley crossed her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve always said you wanted people to enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI also want people to enjoy my china. That doesn\u2019t mean the neighbors can walk into my kitchen and take a plate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bradley set down his father\u2019s old sailboat mug a little harder than necessary.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you making this ugly?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

For one strange second, I remembered every version of my son.<\/p>\n

Bradley at six with chicken pox.<\/p>\n

Bradley at eleven crying after his dog died.<\/p>\n

Bradley at seventeen asking us for money to repair his car.<\/p>\n

Bradley at twenty-three standing next to his father in a rented tuxedo on his wedding day.<\/p>\n

Now he was fifty, standing in my kitchen, asking why I was being difficult because I objected to strangers staying in my home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not making it ugly,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m noticing that it became ugly without me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ashley began gathering the papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cFine. We can discuss it another time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stopped.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re discussing it now.\u201d<\/p>\n

I walked to the refrigerator and pulled down the summer schedule she had taped there.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I folded it once.<\/p>\n

Then again.<\/p>\n

Ashley laughed softly.<\/p>\n

Not cruelly.<\/p>\n

Almost patiently.<\/p>\n

Like I was an elderly woman being unreasonable over something trivial.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarianne, people have already made plans.\u201d<\/p>\n

I put the folded schedule into my purse.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen they can change them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her expression shifted.<\/p>\n

Only slightly.<\/p>\n

But I saw it.<\/p>\n

Fear.<\/p>\n

That interested me.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people already bought plane tickets,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo stay in my house?\u201d<\/p>\n

Bradley rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, please don\u2019t turn this into an ownership issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an ownership issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ashley picked up her bag.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew this would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bradley looked at her.<\/p>\n

She shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me she would understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another conversation about me that had happened without me.<\/p>\n

I stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think breakfast is over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bradley stared.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re throwing us out?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m asking you to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTake the muffins.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ashley did.<\/p>\n

Ten minutes later, their SUV disappeared down the sandy road.<\/p>\n

I stood alone in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Four small pieces of tape remained on the refrigerator.<\/p>\n

I carefully peeled them away.<\/p>\n

Then I grabbed my purse and drove to the county offices.<\/p>\n

I told myself I only wanted to verify something.<\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t true.<\/p>\n

Somewhere between removing that schedule and getting into my car, I had stopped checking.<\/p>\n

I had started acting.<\/p>\n

At the property-records counter, a woman named Denise searched my cottage address.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re Marianne Whitcomb?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

She asked for identification.<\/p>\n

Then she looked back at her screen.<\/p>\n

Relief washed through me.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was filed about six weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands went cold.<\/p>\n

She hesitated.<\/p>\n

I had never heard of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a contact person,\u201d Denise added.<\/p>\n

Her expression answered before she did.<\/p>\n

She printed the filing.<\/p>\n
