My assistant dropped a stack of receipt paper.<\/p>\n

And my husband, Grant, stood near the fitting rooms with his arms crossed, looking pleased with himself.<\/p>\n

I stared at the woman holding my nameplate like she had just won a trophy.<\/p>\n

Then I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cElaine,\u201d I said, \u201cthe CEO is going to love this.\u201d<\/p>\n

She lifted her chin. \u201cCall whoever you want. My son owns this store.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant smirked. \u201cTechnically, Mom is just making the transition easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apparently, that was what they called stealing when expensive shoes were involved.<\/p>\n

For seven years, I had run Belle & Vale\u2019s busiest flagship location. I knew every supplier, every VIP customer, every employee\u2019s birthday, every ceiling leak, every security blind spot, every clean account, and every suspicious one.<\/p>\n

Grant liked telling people I was \u201cin retail\u201d as though it were some kind of charity work.<\/p>\n

What he never mentioned was that the store\u2019s annual profit had tripled under my management.<\/p>\n

He also never told his mother that my signature appeared on far more than staff schedules.<\/p>\n

Elaine had disliked me from the day Grant brought me home.<\/p>\n

I was too practical, too direct, too \u201cworking class\u201d for a family that treated wealth like a personality trait.<\/p>\n

When Grant\u2019s father died and left him a minority stake in Belle & Vale, Elaine decided the entire company was practically hers.<\/p>\n

That morning, she walked in wearing a cream suit and carrying a folder labeled new management structure.<\/p>\n

Grant followed behind her with two cousins.<\/p>\n

And a locksmith.<\/p>\n

\u201cAudit?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Grant stepped closer. \u201cDon\u2019t make this ugly, Claire. We know about the missing vendor credits.\u201d<\/p>\n

There it was.<\/p>\n

The setup.<\/p>\n

Two weeks earlier, accounting had flagged irregular refunds moving through Grant\u2019s private vendor contacts.<\/p>\n

I had reported them directly to corporate compliance.<\/p>\n

Grant must have discovered that.<\/p>\n

So he brought his mother in first, hoping to make me look guilty before the real investigation reached him.<\/p>\n

I picked up my phone.<\/p>\n

Elaine laughed. \u201cYes, call security. Tell them your mother-in-law hurt your feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n

I dialed the CEO.<\/p>\n

When he answered, I said, \u201cMr. Vale, Elaine is here at the flagship. She has a surprise for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
