Elaine\u2019s face twitched. \u201cRichard, darling, Grant and I are protecting the family business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant stopped smiling.<\/p>\n

Richard wasn\u2019t merely the CEO.<\/p>\n

He was Grant\u2019s uncle\u2014the same man Elaine constantly called weak for refusing to hand her son a larger role.<\/p>\n

Richard said, \u201cClaire, is the locksmith still present?\u201d<\/p>\n

The locksmith took a step backward.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd Elaine removed my nameplate, threatened staff, and announced my termination in front of customers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaine pointed at me. \u201cShe is manipulating this. Grant found missing credits in her department.\u201d<\/p>\n

I opened a drawer and pulled out a sealed envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cGrant created missing credits through vendors tied to his cousin\u2019s shell company.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the cousins near the entrance went pale.<\/p>\n

Richard\u2019s voice hardened. \u201cGrant, do not leave the building.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant laughed too sharply. \u201cUncle Richard, you can\u2019t seriously believe her over family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe the audit trail,\u201d Richard said. \u201cAnd I believe the woman I appointed regional operations director last month.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaine stared at me.<\/p>\n

I placed my badge on the counter and turned it around.<\/p>\n

Claire Bennett.<\/p>\n

Belle & Vale Corporate.<\/p>\n

Elaine looked at Grant. \u201cYou said she was just a store manager.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant clenched his jaw. \u201cIt was supposed to be announced next week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt still is,\u201d I said. \u201cAlong with the compliance report.\u201d<\/p>\n

The glass doors opened.<\/p>\n

Two corporate security officers entered with a woman from legal.<\/p>\n

She wore the calm expression of someone whose paperwork had already been completed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Bennett,\u201d she said to Grant, \u201cyour access is suspended pending investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaine grabbed his arm. \u201cThis is impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The legal officer looked at her. \u201cMrs. Bennett, impersonating company authority and attempting to remove an officer from premises may also have consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

I held out the nameplate she had taken.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep it,\u201d I said. \u201cYou may need something to remember today.\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Elaine dropped my nameplate as though it had burned her fingers.<\/p>\n

Grant stepped toward me, suddenly gentle.<\/p>\n

That frightened me more than his arrogance had.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire,\u201d he said softly, \u201clet\u2019s talk at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou brought your mother to my workplace. We can finish here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The legal officer opened the compliance folder on the counter.<\/p>\n

Vendor codes.<\/p>\n

Refund logs.<\/p>\n

Emails.<\/p>\n

Security footage showing Grant entering my office after hours and using my terminal while I was visiting my father in hospice.<\/p>\n

Elaine stared at the screen. \u201cGrant?\u201d<\/p>\n

He snapped, \u201cI did it for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n

Richard arrived twenty minutes later, walking through the front doors without a tie, his anger tightly controlled.<\/p>\n

The staff stepped aside for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is my daughter-in-law,\u201d Elaine said, as if that explained everything.<\/p>\n

Richard\u2019s answer was ice. \u201cShe is my employee. And unlike your son, she earned her title.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant was terminated before noon.<\/p>\n

His vendor accounts were frozen.<\/p>\n

The cousin behind the shell company tried to blame everything on a misunderstanding until legal showed him the invoices.<\/p>\n

Elaine was escorted out last, still insisting everyone would regret humiliating her.<\/p>\n

Nobody did.<\/p>\n

By Monday, Belle & Vale publicly announced my promotion.<\/p>\n
