I stopped on the porch with our three-day-old daughter, Grace, asleep in the carrier against my chest.<\/p>\n

Every breath pulled painfully at my incision.<\/p>\n

I had undergone an emergency C-section less than seventy-two hours earlier. I had barely slept, barely eaten, and still felt as though my body belonged to the hospital.<\/p>\n

The patio doors stood open despite the cold March air.<\/p>\n

Someone had connected a karaoke machine to our television.<\/p>\n

And a woman I barely knew was eating cheesecake from one of our wedding plates.<\/p>\n

I looked at Caleb.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is everybody?\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad invited some family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSome?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ron laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t start counting. That\u2019s how parties get boring.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n

Caleb hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe twenty-two.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwenty-two?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot everybody is staying.\u201d<\/p>\n

That word landed harder.<\/p>\n

\u201cStaying?\u201d<\/p>\n

Caleb closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

Ron answered for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMelissa and Joe drove up from Knoxville. Dana came from Raleigh. Nobody\u2019s driving home tonight after celebrating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tonight.<\/p>\n

Three days earlier, Caleb and I had agreed on one thing with absolute clarity.<\/p>\n

No big visits during the first week.<\/p>\n

Our parents could stop by briefly.<\/p>\n

My sister could come because she had agreed to help me.<\/p>\n

Everyone else would wait.<\/p>\n

Caleb himself had written the family message.<\/p>\n

We love you guys. First week will be quiet. Please wait for us to invite visitors so Erin can recover and Grace can settle in.<\/p>\n

His smile tightened.<\/p>\n
