Wineglasses covered the island. Plates were stacked beside both sinks. Grease coated the roasting pans. Silverware overflowed from serving bowls.<\/p>\n

Patricia laughed.<\/p>\n

For seven years, I had worked as a corporate risk attorney specializing in asset protection, fraud investigations, and shareholder disputes.<\/p>\n

Three months earlier, I had started maternity leave.<\/p>\n

Nathan\u2019s family interpreted maternity leave as unemployment.<\/p>\n

Worse, they believed our entire lifestyle came from Nathan.<\/p>\n

The house.<\/p>\n

The investments.<\/p>\n

The company shares.<\/p>\n

They had no idea whose signatures actually appeared on most of them.<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

Something inside me became strangely quiet.<\/p>\n

For another hour, I washed their plates.<\/p>\n

At 1:17 a.m., a stabbing pain seized my abdomen.<\/p>\n

The casserole dish slipped from my hands.<\/p>\n

Then warm fluid ran down my legs.<\/p>\n

He entered the kitchen with Patricia and Melissa behind him.<\/p>\n

Nathan\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n
