I had spent the afternoon counting everything still waiting at the workshop.<\/p>\n

Thirty-seven dresses, pants, and other garments had already been promised to customers.<\/p>\n

Eleven women had paid deposits.<\/p>\n

Bety\u2019s work calendar was full through the following month.<\/p>\n

This was no longer just about whether I wanted to move.<\/p>\n

Ernesto had built an entire retirement plan without considering the commitments I already had.<\/p>\n

He pointed at the estimated income from selling the machines.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re also using that money to pay for the move.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time that evening, Ernesto looked down.<\/p>\n

I asked him to explain everything he had already agreed to.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t sold our house.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t signed away any property.<\/p>\n

But what he had done was complicated enough.<\/p>\n

He had accepted money for equipment I still used.<\/p>\n

He had promised delivery dates.<\/p>\n

He had reserved the house near San Blas without showing me the agreement.<\/p>\n

And he had already offered our current home to a couple he knew from his old job.<\/p>\n

They had begun preparing to move.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can still fix this,\u201d Paola said carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course we can,\u201d Ernesto replied. \u201cWhat I don\u2019t understand is why your mother wants to ruin something good.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt the familiar impulse to make the argument disappear.<\/p>\n

Lower my voice.<\/p>\n

Clear the dishes.<\/p>\n

Tell everyone we could talk tomorrow.<\/p>\n

I had spent years doing exactly that.<\/p>\n

When Ernesto came home frustrated.<\/p>\n

When money was tight.<\/p>\n

When our children were young.<\/p>\n

Back then, I often confused silence with peace.<\/p>\n

This time, I left my hands on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not moving at the end of the month.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ernesto leaned back.<\/p>\n

We slowly reconstructed the numbers.<\/p>\n

Nine thousand pesos to reserve the house in San Blas.<\/p>\n

Twelve thousand pesos from Luc\u00eda as a deposit on the machines.<\/p>\n

A moving service that could still be canceled without a penalty.<\/p>\n

And money Ernesto had taken from our joint account to complete the reservation.<\/p>\n

We were not financially ruined.<\/p>\n

We were simply dealing with the consequences of a plan Ernesto had made while assuming I would eventually agree.<\/p>\n

The following morning, I called Luc\u00eda.<\/p>\n

I told her we needed to review which machines I was actually willing to sell.<\/p>\n

If we couldn\u2019t reach an agreement, I would return her deposit.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a schedule too,\u201d she reminded me. \u201cI\u2019ve already rented a place for my business.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was right.<\/p>\n

Her plans mattered too.<\/p>\n

She asked for a firm date when I could give her an answer.<\/p>\n

We agreed on Friday.<\/p>\n

After that, I sat down with Bety and Marisol.<\/p>\n

Marisol worked with us three days a week, helping with hems and finishing work.<\/p>\n
