Three months earlier, I\u2019d noticed hotel charges on a credit card Daniel assumed I never checked. Then came the late meetings, new cologne, and locked phone.<\/p>\n

I knew.<\/p>\n

I simply chose not to confront him.<\/p>\n

Daniel had mistaken my silence for stupidity.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire,\u201d he said, lowering his voice, \u201cwe\u2019re adults. Vanessa makes me happy. I\u2019m tired of sneaking around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vanessa opened the champagne she\u2019d brought and poured herself a glass.<\/p>\n

Daniel took one too.<\/p>\n

Then he delivered the sentence he had obviously practiced.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an open marriage now. You have to accept it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n

Not because anything was funny.<\/p>\n

Because Daniel had forgotten something crucial.<\/p>\n

The house wasn\u2019t his.<\/p>\n

Neither was the investment account financing his consulting company.<\/p>\n

And the woman beside him wasn\u2019t nearly as single as he believed.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d discovered that final detail four days earlier.<\/p>\n

So I carefully set the knife on the counter.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo argument?\u201d Vanessa asked with a smirk.<\/p>\n

Daniel looked relieved.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew you\u2019d eventually be reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n

I picked up my phone.<\/p>\n

Daniel frowned. \u201cWho are you calling?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone who should probably hear about our new arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n

I dialed.<\/p>\n

The man answered on the second ring.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. It\u2019s happening tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n

Then a cold voice replied, \u201cI\u2019m ten minutes away.\u201d<\/p>\n

I ended the call.<\/p>\n

Vanessa laughed nervously. \u201cWhat was that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n

I went back to the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Exactly fifteen minutes later, the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n

Daniel answered it.<\/p>\n

A tall man wearing a charcoal coat stepped inside.<\/p>\n

Vanessa turned around.<\/p>\n

Her champagne glass fell from her hand and shattered across my hardwood floor.<\/p>\n
