I had spent those same four months saving every dollar I could so he could have it.<\/p>\n

Then, when we finally reached our accessible seats near the football field, a wealthy stranger was sitting in them.<\/p>\n

His wife\u2019s designer purse was sitting where my son\u2019s wheelchair was supposed to go.<\/p>\n

When I showed him our tickets, he barely looked at them.<\/p>\n

\u201cSit somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

I told him my son couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Those seats were specifically designed for wheelchair access.<\/p>\n

The man shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot my problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he looked at Caleb and added,<\/p>\n

\u201cHe can watch from the concourse. I doubt he even understands football anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

My son quietly touched my arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay, Mom. We can go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could answer, an elderly woman behind us stood up with an old metal lunchbox in her hands.<\/p>\n

She looked at the man.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet out of that seat.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n

Then she handed him the lunchbox.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second he looked inside, his face went pale.<\/p>\n

And less than a minute later, the man who had refused to move was kneeling beside my son\u2019s wheelchair asking for another chance.<\/p>\n

But to understand why, you have to understand what that football game meant to Caleb.<\/p>\n

My name is Dana Pierce.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m thirty-seven years old, and Caleb is my son.<\/p>\n

His father left when Caleb was four, so for most of his life it had been the two of us.<\/p>\n

Caleb discovered football when he was six.<\/p>\n

He found an old, slightly deflated football at a garage sale for three dollars and brought it home like he had discovered treasure.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, can I keep it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he asked,<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know how to throw?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA little.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you teach me?\u201d<\/p>\n

I taught him what I knew.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t much.<\/p>\n

Everything else he learned from videos, coaches, and thousands of hours spent practicing.<\/p>\n

He threw passes in our backyard.<\/p>\n

Ran routes around trees.<\/p>\n

Practiced footwork until the grass was worn thin.<\/p>\n

By eight, he was playing on a youth team.<\/p>\n

By ten, his coaches were beginning to talk about him differently.<\/p>\n

They saw potential.<\/p>\n

Caleb noticed it too, even though he pretended not to.<\/p>\n

Football became his thing.<\/p>\n

His favorite professional team played in a stadium about forty minutes from our house.<\/p>\n

His favorite player was a wide receiver who had grown up in a small Alabama town and worked his way into the league.<\/p>\n

Caleb saved birthday money and money from mowing lawns until he could afford that player\u2019s jersey.<\/p>\n

He wore it every Sunday.<\/p>\n

Then, one afternoon in October, everything changed.<\/p>\n

Caleb was walking home from school.<\/p>\n

He was only two blocks from our house.<\/p>\n

A five-year-old boy was playing outside near the corner when his ball rolled into the street.<\/p>\n

The little boy ran after it.<\/p>\n

At the same moment, a pickup truck was approaching.<\/p>\n

The driver didn\u2019t see the child.<\/p>\n

Caleb did.<\/p>\n

He ran into the street and shoved the little boy back toward the sidewalk.<\/p>\n

The truck hit Caleb instead.<\/p>\n

Thirty miles per hour.<\/p>\n

The driver hadn\u2019t been drinking.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t looking at his phone.<\/p>\n

It was simply one of those horrible moments where several things happen too quickly for anyone to undo them.<\/p>\n

Caleb\u2019s surgery lasted six hours.<\/p>\n

I spent every minute of those six hours in the waiting room wearing the clothes I had worn to work that morning.<\/p>\n

When the surgeon finally came out, I knew from his face that my life was about to be divided into before and after.<\/p>\n

There was damage to Caleb\u2019s spinal cord.<\/p>\n

They had done everything they could.<\/p>\n

But nobody could promise that he would walk again.<\/p>\n

When Caleb woke up, I held his hand.<\/p>\n

His voice was weak.<\/p>\n
