Is Maddie okay?<\/p>\n

She\u2019s fine. She\u2019s home.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be there around six.<\/p>\n

No rush.<\/p>\n

That last message bothered me even more.<\/p>\n

Brian never said \u201cno rush\u201d unless there was very clearly a reason to rush.<\/p>\n

My name is Ellen Marsh.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m forty-one, and I work as a purchasing manager for a manufacturing company.<\/p>\n

After fourteen years in that job, I\u2019ve become good at noticing the difference between a real problem and something pretending not to be a problem yet.<\/p>\n

When I walked through my front door that evening, I knew instantly which kind I was looking at.<\/p>\n

A four-foot section of our living-room wall was gone.<\/p>\n

The couch had been pulled forward.<\/p>\n

Pieces of drywall were stacked neatly beside the fireplace.<\/p>\n

And Brian was standing beside the opening with a utility knife in his hand.<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me, then at the wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks worse than it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was not reassuring.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened to the wall?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian began explaining.<\/p>\n

A loose outlet.<\/p>\n

He removed the cover.<\/p>\n

The drywall cracked.<\/p>\n

He decided to open the wall farther so he could inspect what was behind it.<\/p>\n

I looked at the opening.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou removed four feet of wall because an outlet was loose?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got carried away.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I noticed the tools.<\/p>\n

A drill.<\/p>\n

A level.<\/p>\n

A pry bar.<\/p>\n

A tape measure.<\/p>\n

Everything had been placed neatly on the floor.<\/p>\n

Nothing about the scene looked accidental.<\/p>\n

The drywall wasn\u2019t broken randomly either.<\/p>\n

It had been cut carefully into sections.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis didn\u2019t happen because drywall cracked. You planned to open this wall.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew you were going to make this into a whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to work with a wall.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pointed toward the opening.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came home without one.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m tired. Let\u2019s eat. I\u2019ll explain later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could argue, our twelve-year-old daughter, Maddie, came downstairs.<\/p>\n

Maddie notices everything.<\/p>\n

Always has.<\/p>\n

When she was six and we told her we might get a dog, her first reaction wasn\u2019t excitement.<\/p>\n

She asked what breed, how big it would get, where it would sleep, who would feed it, and whether anyone in the house had allergies.<\/p>\n

She was six.<\/p>\n

So when Maddie walked into the living room, saw a giant hole in the wall, and said absolutely nothing, I knew immediately that she had already seen it.<\/p>\n

And I knew something else.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t want to talk about it in front of Brian.<\/p>\n

\u201cWere you home when Dad did this?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Before she answered, Brian said,<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was upstairs most of the afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maddie glanced at him.<\/p>\n

Then at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n

She grabbed yogurt and went back upstairs.<\/p>\n

That look stayed with me.<\/p>\n

At dinner, she was quieter than usual.<\/p>\n

Every time I brought up the wall, Maddie watched Brian before responding.<\/p>\n

Brian kept redirecting the conversation.<\/p>\n

Work.<\/p>\n
