I stared at my sister-in-law, Vanessa, as the dining room fell silent.<\/p>\n

She was thirty-two, perfectly dressed, and smiling like she had been waiting all evening for this moment.<\/p>\n

My fingers burned where she had struck me.<\/p>\n

Margaret slammed her fork onto the table. \u201cBecause you are a guest in our home.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked around the enormous dining room\u2014the carved walnut walls, antique chandelier, imported marble fireplace.<\/p>\n

They thought wealth made their cruelty sophisticated.<\/p>\n

Daniel leaned closer and hissed, \u201cApologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression hardened.<\/p>\n

That was when something inside me changed.<\/p>\n

Before our wedding, Daniel had been charming, attentive, almost embarrassingly protective. He told me his family could be \u201ctraditional,\u201d but never mentioned humiliation rituals.<\/p>\n

Now I understood why.<\/p>\n

He expected me to submit once the wedding ring made leaving inconvenient.<\/p>\n

Vanessa leaned back smugly.<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

They knew I worked in corporate compliance.<\/p>\n

He had never mentioned I was Director of Ethics and Risk at Ashford Capital\u2014the private investment group that had quietly acquired controlling debt positions in several struggling companies.<\/p>\n

Including one belonging to Margaret and Vanessa.<\/p>\n

Hawthorne Interiors.<\/p>\n

The family business.<\/p>\n

The company whose finances I had been reviewing for three weeks without realizing its owners were about to become my in-laws.<\/p>\n

Until yesterday.<\/p>\n

I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs there anything else about your family you forgot to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

His face shifted for half a second.<\/p>\n
