All I asked was that they cover utilities and taxes.<\/p>\n

At the time, I thought I was giving them security.<\/p>\n

What I didn\u2019t realize was that after enough years of free housing, they would stop viewing it as generosity.<\/p>\n

They began treating the house as though it had always belonged to them.<\/p>\n

And Tessa was even worse.<\/p>\n

She was thirty-two and had spent most of her adult life drifting back into our parents\u2019 spare bedroom.<\/p>\n

Once, I watched Mom guide an elderly aunt toward a stiff wooden seat because Tessa might come downstairs later and want the recliner.<\/p>\n

Clare knew none of this.<\/p>\n

She was seven months pregnant with our first child and dealing with lower-back pain.<\/p>\n

We had stopped by for a casual Saturday lunch.<\/p>\n

Tessa was upstairs.<\/p>\n

Mom was preparing food.<\/p>\n

Tessa stared at Clare again.<\/p>\n

Clare remained calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll get up shortly. I\u2019m comfortable right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was when Tessa took off her loafer and tossed it toward her.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, Tessa was not particularly accurate.<\/p>\n

The shoe missed Clare, hit a framed photograph, and landed in a bowl of pretzels.<\/p>\n

The entire room went silent.<\/p>\n

Clare slowly looked at the shoe.<\/p>\n

I looked back through the window.<\/p>\n

Dad was retrieving Tessa\u2019s shoe from the pretzel bowl and handing it back to her like nothing unusual had happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa paused again.<\/p>\n
