At 4:40 in the morning, my husband yanked the blanket off me and said, \u201cGet up. Mom needs oatmeal before her pills.\u201d That was when I realized my marriage had not become a partnership\u2014it had become an unpaid night shift.<\/p>\n

I stared at Daniel through the blue darkness of our bedroom. Behind him stood his mother, Lorraine, wrapped in my robe as if she owned the place.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019ll be staying with us,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cProbably a few months.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had spent six years swallowing words to keep the peace. I cooked, cleaned, handled the bills, remembered Daniel\u2019s meetings, and drove Lorraine to appointments whenever he was \u201ctoo busy.\u201d I had even postponed a promotion once because Daniel said our home needed me more. Daniel called it being supportive. Lorraine called it my duty.<\/p>\n

But waking me before dawn to manage medication he had never bothered to learn? Something inside me finally went quiet.<\/p>\n

Daniel pointed toward the kitchen. \u201cHer pills are in the blue organizer. Oatmeal, no sugar. And make coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat up slowly. \u201cYou woke me at 4:40 for this?\u201d<\/p>\n

He rolled his eyes. \u201cDon\u2019t make everything dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lorraine added, \u201cA good wife would already be downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at both of them, remembering every birthday he had forgotten and every apology I had made for problems I hadn\u2019t caused.<\/p>\n

Then I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel smirked, convinced he had won.<\/p>\n

I walked past the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Instead, I entered the guest room, pulled my suitcase from the closet, and packed ten shirts, jeans, toiletries, my laptop, and one red folder from the locked bottom drawer of my desk.<\/p>\n

Daniel followed me. \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLeaving.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed. \u201cOver oatmeal?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Over six years.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face hardened. \u201cThis is my house too. You can\u2019t just walk out because Mom needs help.\u201d<\/p>\n

I zipped the suitcase. \u201cInteresting choice of words.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n

What Daniel had forgotten\u2014or perhaps never truly understood\u2014was that the house had been mine before our wedding. My late aunt left it to me free and clear. Daniel\u2019s name was never added to the deed.<\/p>\n

And the consulting company he bragged about \u201cbuilding with his own hands\u201d? I had quietly financed its first two years through a separate inheritance account. Every transfer was documented. So were the personal expenses he had recently started charging to the company.<\/p>\n

I carried my suitcase downstairs.<\/p>\n

Lorraine stood beside the stove. \u201cYou\u2019ll come crawling back.\u201d<\/p>\n

I opened the front door.<\/p>\n
