Those were the first words Brenda\u2014almost my mother-in-law\u2014threw at me as I hurried up the marble steps of the San Antonio venue.<\/p>\n

My name is Samantha Miller. I was thirty-four years old and had spent eight years working as a pediatric trauma surgeon.<\/p>\n

That morning was supposed to be one of the happiest days of my life.<\/p>\n

I was supposed to marry Andrew Foster, the man I had shared a home with for nearly two years and the person I had once believed would stand beside me for the rest of my life.<\/p>\n

But at 6:12 that morning, everything changed.<\/p>\n

My phone rang with an emergency call from St. Luke Memorial Hospital.<\/p>\n

I looked at my white gown hanging from the closet door.<\/p>\n

Then I looked at Andrew, still sleeping peacefully in our bed.<\/p>\n

Twenty-five minutes later, I was scrubbing in.<\/p>\n

The little girl\u2019s name was Paisley Howard.<\/p>\n

She had fallen from an old climbing structure at a neighborhood playground and arrived pale, barely responsive, and in critical condition from internal bleeding.<\/p>\n

Her father, Zachary Howard, ran beside the stretcher until one of the nurses stopped him at the operating-room doors.<\/p>\n

Before we disappeared behind the doors, I watched Zachary bend close to his daughter.<\/p>\n

For nearly five hours, there was only Paisley.<\/p>\n

By the time I reached the venue, it was almost three in the afternoon.<\/p>\n

Something felt wrong immediately.<\/p>\n

The courtyard was full of guests holding drinks and talking casually.<\/p>\n

No one looked as if they were waiting for a bride.<\/p>\n

Then people began noticing me.<\/p>\n

A faint smile appeared on her face.<\/p>\n

She paused deliberately.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith his wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

For several seconds, I thought I had misunderstood her.<\/p>\n

I pushed past her and entered the hall.<\/p>\n

Andrew was standing near the front of the room wearing the charcoal suit we had chosen together months earlier.<\/p>\n

Beside him stood Gemma.<\/p>\n

My best friend.<\/p>\n

My maid of honor.<\/p>\n

She was wearing a white bridal gown.<\/p>\n

She held a bouquet of roses.<\/p>\n

And on her finger was the diamond ring Andrew and I had selected together\u2014a ring he had claimed needed to be taken away for resizing.<\/p>\n

I stopped moving.<\/p>\n

Andrew looked at me as though my arrival was an inconvenience.<\/p>\n

That hurt more than seeing Gemma dressed as his bride.<\/p>\n

Behind him, Brenda spoke again.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve already caused enough drama. Leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gemma never looked me in the eye.<\/p>\n

I could have screamed.<\/p>\n

I could have demanded explanations in front of everyone.<\/p>\n

I could have cried.<\/p>\n

Instead, I turned around and walked toward the doors.<\/p>\n

Just as my hand reached the brass handle, someone called from outside.<\/p>\n

He seemed to understand enough.<\/p>\n

He opened the passenger door of his truck.<\/p>\n

At that moment, I believed I had lost my wedding because I had arrived late.<\/p>\n

I had no idea the truth was far uglier.<\/p>\n
