Diane picked up one of the rolls I had baked that morning and examined it between two fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, these look cheap.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brooke laughed.<\/p>\n

Eric finally spoke.<\/p>\n

But there was a smile on his face.<\/p>\n

That smile hurt more than anything Diane had said.<\/p>\n

I had spent forty-eight hours shopping, chopping vegetables, preparing desserts, brining the turkey, cleaning, organizing, and cooking because Eric had begged me to rescue Thanksgiving after Diane\u2019s caterer canceled.<\/p>\n

Now his family was using the meal I had created as entertainment at my expense.<\/p>\n

I slowly untied my apron.<\/p>\n

Diane raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n

Eric followed me into the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen order food.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t take Thanksgiving dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI paid for it and cooked it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Actually, it was only the first point.<\/p>\n

The second was something Eric\u2019s family knew nothing about.<\/p>\n

For years, they had assumed I was a modest freelance accountant who lived comfortably because Eric earned good money.<\/p>\n

They had no idea that a large part of my work involved forensic accounting for private investment firms.<\/p>\n

And they certainly didn\u2019t know who had hired me three weeks earlier.<\/p>\n

I loaded the final casserole into the back of my SUV.<\/p>\n

Eric followed me into the driveway.<\/p>\n
