A week before the wedding, Vanessa called me.<\/p>\n

I was sitting at my kitchen table drinking coffee when her name appeared on my phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoan, would you mind not wearing blue to the wedding?\u201d<\/p>\n

The request caught me off guard.<\/p>\n

I had already purchased a navy dress.<\/p>\n

It had taken me weeks to find something I genuinely liked. It was elegant without being flashy, flattering without being uncomfortable, and practical enough for an entire day of wedding activities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs there something wrong with the dress?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Then I looked around.<\/p>\n

Two of Vanessa\u2019s aunts were wearing blue too.<\/p>\n

They even had coordinated corsages.<\/p>\n

I tried telling myself there must be a reasonable explanation.<\/p>\n

Before the ceremony, I found Vanessa surrounded by relatives and friends.<\/p>\n

Then I looked directly at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m the groom\u2019s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gave me a small, tight smile.<\/p>\n

Not embarrassed.<\/p>\n

Not apologetic.<\/p>\n

Just a smile that made it clear she understood exactly what she had said.<\/p>\n
