And the apple pie?<\/p>\n

It was supposed to be part of a family tradition honoring Evan\u2019s late grandmother.<\/p>\n

Diane\u2019s voice suddenly came through the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire, please. Bring them back.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at my mother\u2019s table.<\/p>\n

It was exactly what she meant, but I was too tired to argue over wording.<\/p>\n

Evan finally took the phone from her. \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cI should\u2019ve shut that down the second they started.\u201d<\/p>\n

I appreciated that more than he probably knew.<\/p>\n

For years, holidays with his family followed the same pattern. Diane organized everything, Madison criticized anything she had not chosen, and everyone else laughed because confronting either of them made things uncomfortable. I usually went along with it. I brought food, helped clean, smiled through the comments, and went home annoyed.<\/p>\n

This time, I had simply removed the thing they were criticizing.<\/p>\n

Every Thanksgiving, Evan\u2019s family placed a small card beside an apple pie because Grandma Helen had been famous for making one. I knew that. But nobody had told me the actual pie mattered.<\/p>\n

Madison sounded irritated. \u201cDad was going to make a toast. He found Grandma\u2019s old recipe card this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait. Was I supposed to use her recipe?\u201d<\/p>\n

Another pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Madison admitted. \u201cMom didn\u2019t want to tell you because she thought you\u2019d get nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n

I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n

For once, she had nothing to say.<\/p>\n

After I hung up, Mom sat beside me.<\/p>\n
