I found my lip balm wedged behind the seat rail, but the keys had my attention now.<\/p>\n

I sat upright and lined them across my thigh.<\/p>\n

Liam didn\u2019t own rental properties.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t manage apartments.<\/p>\n

We had no storage unit.<\/p>\n

Something in my voice must have registered because he went quiet.<\/p>\n

I picked up the blue key.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are there four keys underneath your driver\u2019s seat?\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence was heavy.<\/p>\n

Then Liam asked, \u201cWhich ones?\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat back. \u201cWhich ones?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, God. Meryl, that\u2019s not what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cApparently you have enough secret keys that color coding matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey aren\u2019t secret.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re under your seat.\u201d I looked at the receipt. \u201cAnd you had them made this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMeryl, put them back exactly where you found them.\u201d<\/p>\n

I actually laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the worst possible thing you could\u2019ve said.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know how it sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t think you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t belong to anyone you\u2019re thinking about, Meryl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have no idea what I\u2019m thinking about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen tell me who they belong to,\u201d I demanded.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

For a moment, I felt ridiculous interrogating my husband over a handful of keys.<\/p>\n

Then his silence stretched on.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre these women\u2019s keys?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat? No!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen whose?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMeryl\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFive years, Liam. Have I ever gone through your phone?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cChecked your email? Asked where you were every five minutes?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGod, no\u2026 stop\u2026 please\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t make me feel silly for asking why my husband has four strangers\u2019 keys hidden in his car.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen answer me.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice suddenly changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t drive home yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I haven\u2019t finished.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFinished what?\u201d<\/p>\n
