The house sat behind tall iron gates, framed by manicured lawns, mature trees, stone terraces, and a circular driveway crowded with luxury cars.<\/p>\n
Nearly ninety relatives, friends, and business associates had gathered for the afternoon.<\/p>\n

Piper was eight.<\/p>\n
Noelle was five.<\/p>\n
They had barely finished half their meals when my mother-in-law, Constance Holloway, walked toward us.<\/p>\n
Constance wore an ivory pantsuit, expensive-looking jewelry, and the confident expression she always carried whenever she believed she controlled the room.<\/p>\n
Without asking, she lifted Piper\u2019s plate.<\/p>\n
Then she took Noelle\u2019s.<\/p>\n
Piper blinked.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrandma, I\u2019m still eating.\u201d<\/p>\n
Constance smiled as though Piper had said something amusing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s plenty of food elsewhere, sweetheart. The main dishes are really meant for the family table.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then she looked at me.<\/p>\n
\u201cBesides, your mother should understand by now that traditions matter. A family name has to be carried forward somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n
I knew exactly what she meant.<\/p>\n
She had made similar remarks for years.<\/p>\n
Because Grant and I had two daughters instead of sons, Constance behaved as though my children somehow held a lesser place in the Holloway family.<\/p>\n
Several relatives heard her.<\/p>\n
Nobody challenged her.<\/p>\n

She pushed the container toward us too quickly.<\/p>\n
A little sauce spilled onto Noelle\u2019s light-blue dress and touched Piper\u2019s cheek.<\/p>\n
My youngest froze.<\/p>\n
Piper looked across the lawn toward her father.<\/p>\n
I did too.<\/p>\n
Grant sat at the central table surrounded by relatives and business friends.<\/p>\n

Not because he had never dismissed me before.<\/p>\n

But this time, my daughters heard him too.<\/p>\n
