But I had learned that the moments that divide your life into before and after rarely arrive with warning.<\/p>\n

My name is Catherine Marsh. I was fifty-four years old, and I had been married to my husband, David, for thirty-one years.<\/p>\n

We met when I was twenty-three and he was twenty-six at a work event neither of us wanted to attend.<\/p>\n

We were both standing near the food table, silently waiting for enough time to pass that leaving wouldn\u2019t seem rude.<\/p>\n

David glanced at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much longer do you think we have to stay?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the clock.<\/p>\n

\u201cForty minutes. After that, we\u2019re free.\u201d<\/p>\n

We lasted exactly forty minutes.<\/p>\n

Then we left together, found a diner three blocks away, and talked until the employees started wiping tables around us in the very obvious hope that we would finally go home.<\/p>\n

We had been together ever since.<\/p>\n

To understand what happened next, you need to understand David.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t a dramatic man.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t talk endlessly about his feelings.<\/p>\n

He showed love through actions.<\/p>\n

He remembered when something in the house needed fixing.<\/p>\n

He noticed when my car sounded strange.<\/p>\n

He brought home the coffee I liked without being asked.<\/p>\n

If he said he would be somewhere, he was there.<\/p>\n

David had worked as a residential contractor for almost thirty years, and reliability seemed built into him.<\/p>\n

He believed that if you built something, you built it properly because somebody else had to live with what you left behind.<\/p>\n

That was how he approached houses.<\/p>\n

And, I thought, our marriage.<\/p>\n

We never had children.<\/p>\n

We had tried when we were younger, but it simply hadn\u2019t happened.<\/p>\n

By our late thirties, we had stopped thinking of our life as incomplete and started accepting that it was simply going to look different from what we had once imagined.<\/p>\n

And it was a good life.<\/p>\n

At least, I had always believed it was.<\/p>\n

Then came my surgery.<\/p>\n

It was for a complicated hernia.<\/p>\n

Nothing life-threatening, but serious enough that I would need a lengthy hospital stay and several weeks of limited activity afterward.<\/p>\n

David was there when they took me in.<\/p>\n

He was there when I woke up.<\/p>\n

The expression on his face when he realized I was conscious and talking told me he had been far more frightened than he had admitted.<\/p>\n

He stayed several hours that first day.<\/p>\n

Then he went home.<\/p>\n

He returned Saturday.<\/p>\n

Then Tuesday.<\/p>\n

At least, those were the days I remembered him visiting.<\/p>\n

So when one of the nurses came into my room on Thursday, noticed the yellow flowers beside my bed, and smiled, I didn\u2019t think much of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have such a devoted husband,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a good man.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe certainly is. He\u2019s here every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded casually.<\/p>\n

\u201cTall gentleman? Gray hair? Usually wearing a blue jacket?\u201d<\/p>\n

My smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

That description fit David perfectly.<\/p>\n

Tall.<\/p>\n

Gray hair.<\/p>\n

Navy jacket.<\/p>\n

But he had not visited me every day.<\/p>\n

Or at least, he had not visited me.<\/p>\n

I considered correcting her.<\/p>\n

Then something stopped me.<\/p>\n

Instead, I said nothing.<\/p>\n

After she left, I stared at the yellow flowers for a long time.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, I called David.<\/p>\n

We spoke normally.<\/p>\n

He told me he would come see me again in three days.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t mention what the nurse had said.<\/p>\n

Thirty-one years of marriage had taught me that sometimes it was better to understand what you were dealing with before confronting it.<\/p>\n

Maybe the nurse was confused.<\/p>\n

Maybe she had mistaken another man for David.<\/p>\n

Or maybe something was happening that I didn\u2019t yet understand.<\/p>\n

The following morning, my doctor told me I was strong enough to walk farther down the hallway.<\/p>\n

So I put on my robe, slipped my feet into hospital slippers, gripped my walker, and slowly made my way toward the elevators.<\/p>\n

I had almost reached the curve in the corridor when the elevator doors opened.<\/p>\n

And David stepped out.<\/p>\n

He was holding flowers.<\/p>\n

For half a second, I felt relieved.<\/p>\n

There he was.<\/p>\n

My husband.<\/p>\n

He had surprised me.<\/p>\n

I opened my mouth to call his name.<\/p>\n

Then he turned.<\/p>\n

And walked away from my room.<\/p>\n

I stopped.<\/p>\n

David didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t look confused.<\/p>\n

He moved with the confidence of someone who knew exactly where he was going.<\/p>\n

My first instinct was to believe there had to be an innocent explanation.<\/p>\n

Maybe he was visiting a client.<\/p>\n

A friend.<\/p>\n

Someone from work.<\/p>\n

Perhaps he had simply planned to see them before coming to me.<\/p>\n

But then I remembered the nurse.<\/p>\n

He comes every day.<\/p>\n

I followed him.<\/p>\n

Slowly.<\/p>\n

Painfully.<\/p>\n

Pushing the walker ahead of me while he disappeared farther down the corridor.<\/p>\n

At the end of the hallway, he turned.<\/p>\n
