Things had been simple enough until my older sister, Martha, came back into the picture.<\/p>\n

Martha is 32, and there\u2019s really no polite way to say this: responsibility has never been her strongest quality.<\/p>\n

When she got a speeding ticket, Mom wrote the check while complaining that police unfairly targeted young women.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, I was cleaning toilets at a diner to save for college and taking out loans to cover the rest of my tuition.<\/p>\n

For the last couple of years, I assumed Martha had been living independently.<\/p>\n

Apparently, I was wrong.<\/p>\n

She had actually been moving from apartment to apartment, repeatedly falling behind on rent and depending on Mom and Dad to keep her afloat.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know any of that until she showed up one day and casually announced that she was pregnant.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not interested in judging anyone for their choices, but Martha was nowhere near financially or emotionally stable.<\/p>\n

The baby\u2019s father was a man she had only been seeing for a few months.<\/p>\n

From what I understood, he wasn\u2019t exactly excited about the pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Once she told him, he essentially disappeared.<\/p>\n

You might think becoming a mother would finally force Martha to get serious about her life.<\/p>\n

Instead, she ran directly to Mom and Dad, who immediately shifted into rescue mode.<\/p>\n

Within a week, they began renovating their basement into a small apartment for her.<\/p>\n

They even installed a kitchenette.<\/p>\n

I never asked exactly where the money came from, but I overheard Mom mention using some of their retirement savings.<\/p>\n

I tried to stay out of it.<\/p>\n

It was their money.<\/p>\n

If they wanted to spend it helping Martha again, that was their decision.<\/p>\n

Still, I could already see where things were heading.<\/p>\n

My parents had a habit of turning Martha\u2019s problems into everyone else\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n

Whenever she created another mess, suddenly the entire family was expected to sacrifice until things were fixed.<\/p>\n

At first, I convinced myself it wouldn\u2019t involve me.<\/p>\n

The basement would become Martha\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n

She would have her own space.<\/p>\n

I would continue working, saving money, and living my own life.<\/p>\n

It was irritating to watch my parents bend over backward for her again, but I tried not to focus on it.<\/p>\n

That lasted about two months.<\/p>\n

Then the little comments started.<\/p>\n

Mom began telling me I should spend more time with Martha because she was struggling.<\/p>\n

Apparently, the fact that I worked full-time and came home exhausted most days wasn\u2019t relevant.<\/p>\n

Then came the guilt trips.<\/p>\n

Mom would say things like, \u201cYou know, Martha doesn\u2019t have anyone else to lean on right now. It\u2019s so hard being pregnant and single.\u201d<\/p>\n
