The line went dead.<\/p>\n

When I rushed into the diner, the first thing I noticed was a metal bus tub overturned on the floor.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Evan stood in the middle of the mess.<\/p>\n

His apron was soaked, one sleeve twisted at the shoulder, and his cheeks were red from arguing.<\/p>\n

Across from him, an older man held one end of a white envelope.<\/p>\n

Mr. Alvarez spotted me near the entrance.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am\u2026 Thank God.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evan spun around.<\/p>\n

The instant he saw me, he released the envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody answered.<\/p>\n

I pointed to the envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that your paycheck?\u201d<\/p>\n

Evan stared at the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd why was Cal holding it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Cal tossed the envelope onto the counter.<\/p>\n

I turned to Evan.<\/p>\n

Cal folded his arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen tell her what it\u2019s like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evan\u2019s head snapped up.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvan,\u201d I said sharply.<\/p>\n

He fell silent.<\/p>\n

I picked up the paycheck.<\/p>\n

Evan glared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked toward Mr. Alvarez.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan someone please tell me what\u2019s happening?\u201d<\/p>\n

The owner leaned against the register.<\/p>\n
