A moment later, Daniel sat up beside me.<\/p>\n

Instead of defending me, my husband reached over and pulled the covers away.<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

I was still sore from an accident the previous evening and had barely slept.<\/p>\n

Margaret stood in the hallway wearing an elegant silk robe, looking completely refreshed despite the hour.<\/p>\n

She gave me an impatient glance.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoffee first. Then eggs. Robert likes his bacon crispy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her husband, Robert, was already downstairs watching television.<\/p>\n

I looked from Margaret to Daniel.<\/p>\n

Little by little, Margaret began acting as though the house belonged to her.<\/p>\n

She rearranged my kitchen without asking.<\/p>\n

She opened mail addressed to me.<\/p>\n

She criticized my clothes, my schedule, and even the way I organized the refrigerator.<\/p>\n

Most of all, she constantly reminded Daniel that a \u201cgood wife\u201d should take care of her husband\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

Daniel had gradually started agreeing with her.<\/p>\n

Or perhaps he had always agreed.<\/p>\n

Maybe I had simply taken too long to notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cApologize to Mom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaret crossed her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor your attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n

I gave a quiet laugh.<\/p>\n

That only irritated Daniel more.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust go downstairs and cook.\u201d<\/p>\n

I steadied myself against the railing before walking down.<\/p>\n

Behind me, Margaret muttered:<\/p>\n

Then my phone started ringing inside the bedroom.<\/p>\n

Everyone stopped.<\/p>\n

Daniel glanced toward it.<\/p>\n

Three short tones.<\/p>\n

A priority call.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, I was completely awake.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to answer that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaret scoffed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho could possibly need you at five in the morning?\u201d<\/p>\n

I ignored her and walked back into the bedroom.<\/p>\n

The name glowing on my screen made my heart beat faster.<\/p>\n

\nFINANCIAL CRIMES UNIT<\/p>\n

I answered immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMs. Mercer,\u201d Detective Reeves said. \u201cThe warrant has been approved.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward the doorway.<\/p>\n

Daniel was standing there, watching me.<\/p>\n

Reeves continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe finished tracing the withdrawals from the corporate accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

I looked directly at Daniel.<\/p>\n

A moment earlier, he had seemed completely confident.<\/p>\n

Now his expression slowly changed.<\/p>\n
